Trouble Shifting In Reverse (manual)
 

I have a 5 speed EX. Not all the time but often enough I have a lot of trouble shifting into reverse. All of the other gears shift very smoothly so I don't think the clutch needs adjustment. To fix the problem I usually need to shift into 1st or 4th while parked before shifting into reverse.

Anyone else with this problem? I'm only at 1400 miles so I figured I'd wait until the 1st service at 5k unless the problem gets real bad.

yeah its like that on all the civics i think..cause my dad has an old civic hatch and it has the same thing....i just go into second and then reverse...no biggie

The transmission has a lockout to prevent the driver from shifting into reverse from 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears, so you don't accidently go into reverse while driving.

doesn't the manual tell you to wait 3 secs b4 you shift into reverse from neutral?

Typically I park it in neutral so the car is started in neutral and there is probably more than 1/2 a minute between the start time warming up and when I go to back up. It sounds like this isn't such an unusual issue so I won't sweat it. My wife's Subaru has a similar behavior where I often need to shift it to first before I can go into reverse.

pretty much every 5spd I've ever driven has this problem. Solution (got this from the manual in my old toyota)...

If you're having trouble engaging reverse, put the car back in Neutral, Press the Clutch to the floor, Release it. Then try Reverse again. Works almost every time (for me at least)

i wonder if that was why my 88 dodge omni sometimes had problems going into reverse

same here, but just make sure the car is siting still before u put in rev..

mine does that too, i have a 5-speed LX almost at 10,000 miles and it sticks sometimes when i go to put it in reverse. almost always when i go to back out of my driveway, i have to wiggle it around to a couple gears before putting it in reverse..i think it must be a safety thing, like someone else said, cause like yours, mine goes into all the other gears smoothly, except rev.

Double clutching, I do this in between every gear, while driving, make the shifts MUCH smoother, you kinda have to relearn how to drive but im just as fast now with this as I was the old way, plus my girlfriend doesn't complain about the neck jerks anymore, though i think this was due to the pos tranny in my s-10

Okay well i don't put it in to reverse every time, but i pull it out of gear, clutch in, clutch out, then in then next gear, then release and gas.

I've never actually known what double clutching was. thanks. I've been told that it's using the dissengaging and engaging the clutch midway through a gear to keep rpms up. but I knew that one wasn't true.

All manual are like these if having problem shifting to reverse Put it to 1st gear then put it in reverse

I've been using NitehawkVTEC suggestion of putting it neutral, releasing the clutch, depressing the clutch and trying reverse again. Just as he wrote it works almost every time.

Yeah I think that would work. But when shifting to 1st then reverse you don't need to release the clutch. Anyway do what suit you best
