I prefer to pressure wash the engine if it is real dirty. People will tell you not to because of water getting into components but I have been doing this for a long time and nothing really bad has happened. I used to get water in the distributor and the car would run like crap until it dried out. We don't have one so it's not an issue.

I think it's best to just pop the hood every other time you wash the car and go over the the whole engine compartment with a regular sponge and car soap.

Keep in mind that if you use a degreaser to clean the engine, it will get on your paint. It will strip the wax and damage the paint if you don't get it off in a hurry. That's why I don't ever use any kind of engine cleaner. Well, I used it once and it left streaks on the fenders where it dripped down. You don't want to know how long I had to polish to get rid of them.

I think the safer way would be to get some degreaser and a towel. Just wipe off the areas you want to clean, it maybe a good ideal to also use some kind of rubber protected and spary it on the hoses. This will recondtion the hoses and last longer.

Meguiars makes this stuff called "EXTRA" and it is a great product. Basically, it just degreases your engine, you spray it on and wait a couple minutes and then wipe off. It is the best product I have used on my engine..

i use some sort of foamy engine cleaner - spray it on, let it work through the grime, then low pressure rinse - make sure to start your car up right away and let it idle a bit to dry the water out.
