Porter Cable 7424
 

Ok after much reading here and on crsx, i think i have decided i need to buy a PC. But the thing i dont understand is the pads. Like i can get the PC for $100 but i dont know what pads to buy separate. All these old threads links are dead lol so here i am asking everyone.

would that be the one to buy i guess if i was really trying to get rid of swirls, and some light scratches. Like i read the description, but i want an opinion of someone who has used it.

Finally for the actual wax. Can i use my meguiars gold class?? on the bottle it sez that i can use it with buffers/polishers, but is there something better. Like would i have to use the 3M swirl remover compound first, then some other stuff, then the gold class last??

How confident are you with using a power buffer?

I'd try something like Meguiars #7 (i think... I'll check on that to make sure) polish that you can use with your hands or on a PC.

Well it would be my first time using a powered buffer, but from what they say this PC is simple to use. theres a vid of some mom detailing a car for the first time. i know the basics, like use the weight of the machine, dont stay on one place for 2+ seconds (depending on speed), and how to do the passes. So in that aspect i think i would be ok

hey whats up,

i have about a 2 year experience with the PC and lemme tell you, you will never figure out how you lived without it. A few interesting facts about the PC is that you dont have to worry about burning your paint or ruining it or any other worry. The way it revolves is in its name : Dual Action Polisher. Not like a rotary buffer where it spins in one direction, the PC both spins and revloves so its not too concentrated on one spot.

as for the pads and compounds I recommend this set up:

Since you say you can get the PC for $100 do that but make sure it comes with a backing plate.

Then for the pads, I recommend Meguiar's.NOT because of the brand name, but because I use them and I think they offer the best feel for when your buffing. heres the link i use:

Choose the "W8006, W9006 3 Pads Each." deal as you stated you are only ridding light swirls and scratches. Use the polishing pad for compounds such as paint cleaners and polishes and use the finishing pad for wax and sealants.

Then for compounds I always go with #83 ( Dual Action Polish Cleaner) and #89 ( SPeed Glaze). I, as well as any other member, would agree that that combo is unbeatable. Expecially for a beginner, just follow the instructions and you'll have amazing results.

you can def. use the Gold class wax you are doing. you dont have to work it in at all, just put the PC at speed 1 and lightly glaze the wax over your car.

What about the ones in my link, i should just buy the buffer separate, and gets the pads separate?
2 Orange 5.5” Pad (light to moderate swirl remover)
2 White 5.5” Pads (for applying wax or sealants)

Also what is the #83 ( Dual Action Polish Cleaner) and #89 ( SPeed Glaze)??? i cant find them on meguiars' site.. :/

I personally like using Lake Country Manufacturing pads with my PC. I've used Lake Country for the past 4 years and they are quality pads. These are highly recommended on Autopia.org. They do offer 6.5" pads, but I really like using 7.5"; it cuts down on a little time.

They have different colored pads, but in reality, all you need is orange (or yellow... these are more abrasive then the orange) for swirl removers, white for polishes, and black for applying sealants. They've since released blue ones for sealants, but black work just as well... your choice.

Take a look around on that site (danase.com). If I could recommend some good brands... look into Poorboy's. They make good swirl removers and sealants. Clearkote is another of my favorite brands. Good stuff! :tup:

as for pad combos I was just suggesting what I thought would be good for a beginner as yourself. I had my experience with the LC pads but to me Meguiars' pads as i mentioned before had a better feel. Especially since you had to work in the formula good until the film clears up as you will read in the directions, it just made me feel more controlled over what I was doing. But you can do just the same with any other product as said above, but again thats just my experienced based opinion.

I like this response. This is what I tell my friends all the time. I have my preferences, but in the end, it's about trying different things and seeing what you like. For example, my friend has tried LC and Wolfgang pads. He doesn't like the LC's, but loves the Wolfgangs. I hate the Wolfgangs! LOL They squeal alot and I feel I don't have good control over them. Sadly, although I've tried lots of products (you should see my detailing arsenal... lol), I've never tried Meg's pads. Maybe I'll try them out when I need more pads.

It's 20% more powerful than the PC. I've tried it and yeah, you can tell it's more powerful right away. The oscillations are alot smoother/smaller than the PC's, but at the same, I don't like how the vibrations flows throught the unit. My hands kind of hurted afterwards... LOL It still feels just as safe on the paint as the PC. My main complaint was the power button. The button is pretty loose and can easily be switched on. While using it, it switched on accidentally twice. Would I recommend it... eh, I wasn't completely sold. Until they work out the quirks, I would just get the PC.
