Porter Cable Polishers, which to buy?
 

I want to buy a polisher so I can deal with owning a black car! :hithead:

im looking at either the 7424 or the 7336SP, are they both the same, only the later coming with a polishing pad???

if i remember correctly... its just differnt counterweights.... get the 7336 at Lowes for 99 dollars, then get you a pad kit. The counterweight on the 7336 is actually better than the 7424.

either the 7424 or 7336 will do. the 7424 has a 5" counterweight and the 7336 a 6" counterweight (no noticable difference in performance). the 7336 is more easily available and therefore most people buy it at lowes, and buy a backing plate/pad combo online at several different vendors. here's a very nice backing plate/pad combo http://autopia-carcare.com/son-daspad-kit.html :)

The diff between the two is this: The 7424 is sold as JUST a polisher and does not come with the sanding pad back plate. The 7336SP is sold as a SANDER/POLISHER and comes with both a sanding pad back plate and the polishing pad with it's built in back plate. The 7428 looks like it's a heavier duty rotary polisher, but the discriptions doesn't say, so it's hard to tell.

The best part is the PC will have a Lifetime Warranty. But their cheap enough that if they break after the Porter Cable warranty, that you can just replace them, should you decide to buy one that is not the Meguiar's Porter Cable model (which is the same as the 7424 and 7336SP) . I just bought the second package on the above website, and will be trying it out for the first time this weekend.

Once you buy the one say at Lowes, get the backing plate and the pads, you may as well have bought a package that is ready to go out of the box with backing plate and pads. But either way you'll have a good system to take care of your car's paint.

Oh and the pad that comes with the PC that you can buy at Lowes (or most hardware stores), for $109 bucks, most people have said it's not worth using, other than to put a mircofiber bonnet on to buff off wax or polish if that.

Rckdrmr that Sonüs DAS Polisher kit (pad and back plate kit), looks like a nice one to try out as well.

why dont you get an orbital / random? i think it is easier to use compared to a polisher that can rip up the paint.

the PC is the king of the detailing world.

with the right selection backing plates and pads, you can take care of most imperfections in your paint. swirls, fine scratches, applying your products, it does it all.

yup and its dual action... so it will not hurt your paint... great for beginners and masters alike.

I'm bout to attempt moving up to a rotary.

If I get a 23' boat to do.. ima get me the Metabo rotary. PC cant do shit on a gelcoat.

yeah, dual action is as close to hand motion as you can get with a machine. Rotary requires a lot of skill, theres a fine line between removing a defect and burning the paint. If its paint over a plastic peice, you risk melting it under the paint by using a rotary, but with a PC you will have to really screw up to do that.
