Paint on 1969 mustang? Hey everyone, my dad and I work on a 1969 mustang and today I was waxing it for the first time in a year and I didn't get the results that I wanted. It isn't driven much, usually is kept in the garage, and it has been atleast a year since it was waxed last. I used meguiars NXT and on the top surfaces, they were not smooth like I was expecting. I need to get the surface areas as smooth as my civic, so what would be the best way to go about that? I am thinking Meguiars paint cleaner and using my orbital buffer. What do you all think. Car show is next weekend so I need to get this done. |
What exactly did you do? Just washed then waxed? |
Yea, thats what I did |
You need to wash that thing, clay bar it with Mother's clay, polish it and then wax it. Oh, and throw away that NXT! If you guys do all of your work by hand use Mother's 3 step system. If you use a good buffer I can give you other options. You won't get it smooth without prepping the paint the right way first. Wax is not going to do much except put a coat of protectant on the paint. |

I have the clay bar kit and ill give it a try. I was thinking about using it before I even posted, just had to make sure. |
The key to a great looking car is prepping the paint before waxing it. Our 7th gen civics are new, not older than the 2001 model, so a lot of people can get away with just waxing their car to get their 'vic to look great. Older cars will need some paint prep before waxing. Washing, Claying, Polishing, and a Glaze before waxing is a great way to prep the paint. The '69 mustang probably has a single stage paint job (no clear coat), if it's the original paint. Some products work differently on clear coats (CC), than they do on single stage (SS) paint. A better place to get some advice is here: http://www.autopia.org You can also search the forums for previous postings on SS paint. Good luck! |
No, this paint job is only about 2 years old, hasn't been detailed for a year. |
I used the clay magic clay bar kit today on my 69' mustang that it worked great. Though my car isn't waxed or new, it looks like it is brand new and has just been waxed. Can't wait to see it completely detailed. |
Yep, proper paint prep is the key. Glad you were happy with the clay job. |
Is it nice and smooth like a babys butt? :p |
hell yea, and I am always touching babies butts. |
