How Quiet Inside Your Civic?

guys,

i drove a friends civic (about a year old) & when i compare the sound inside this civic compared to mine (2+ years old) this new civic is quiet, really sounds new, i mean in the highway mine seems like having a wind leaking inside of of some kind, whooshing / humming type

is it typical the the older your vic the noisier it gets? (disregard the exhaust & intakes, im concern about how air tight you are compared to the brand new)

is it the rubber-seal thingy on your doors that sould be replaced? :_doh:

ohiojosh78 10-14-2004 09:45 AM

If you want your car quieter just take up your carpet and lay down a layer of dynamat or spray some rubberized sound deadener. Either or really help around the rear wheelwell because there is none there from the factory.

Like I tell everyone else, just turn up your music and you wont here it.

^^What he said

masarak 10-17-2004 09:29 PM

What kind of tires you have really makes a difference with road noise, too.

CivicsRdBest 10-17-2004 11:21 PM

You do know they put more sound-deadening material in the Civic for 03 and up right?

rEkKaShInObI 10-17-2004 11:40 PM

my car only has 5,000 miles, so its pretty quiet

M3RKR33 10-18-2004 08:20 AM

my 02 LX with 66000 KM is pretty damn noisy on the highway. but like streetglower said, i just crank up my sound system a lil and forget abt it

civic_sedan 10-21-2004 07:31 PM

at a standstill my 02' dx-g is quiet at a mouse!

mrchowmein 10-21-2004 07:50 PM

04 Civics are a lot quieter than 01s-03s cuz they refined the car by stuffing more sound dampening. Also the car has a lil softer touched ive noticed. such as the door handle and roof handles dont snap back as hard and the suspension is not as hard. Also the RATTLES are gone!!!

PopcornPlaya 10-21-2004 08:13 PM

My 01 is pretty quiet when going down the road. Of course I have 10 cans of expanding foam, 200 sq ft of FatMat, and an additional layer of carpet padding in the floor. It's still not as dead as I want it though.

4drcivic2k1 10-25-2004 08:22 AM

Mine is loud. Creaks, squeeks, wind and road noise.

HomerSimpson 10-25-2004 08:46 AM

Mine is loud. Actually louder inside then my wifes 12yr old car.

stock 10-28-2004 01:13 AM

Anyone have strange noises from the behind the dash area? It's more noticable when cold.

againifall 10-28-2004 07:25 PM

my 02 lx (ill hit 30k monday on the way home from work unless i end up going out this weekend.. which i wont cuz i have no life) is super quiet.. but then again my last car was a 76 lemens.. so..... yeah..

coop 10-29-2004 04:41 PM

01 is very quiet

our 98 sedan has a wind whistle noise somewhere that I can't isolate. I've tried everything I can think of and have NO CLUE what it is. I've thought of taking it to a dealer but I have no idea how they would be able to find it.

2K1Civic17"Gabe 10-29-2004 05:22 PM

01 isnt that bad at all. It holds sound quite well. When I am bumping my system with the door shut and windows up, it holds all the bass in really well, but if I crack a window, or open a door, you will here it for a good distance. It's also nice and quiet other than the exhaust when I am driving. Freeways on windy days suck.

zackde 12-06-2004 08:00 AM

yeah i got that dash noise when its cold? what is that?

coop 12-06-2004 08:19 AM

plastic paneling - not much you can do.

thiscrackerntam 12-06-2004 08:44 AM

Mine isnt quiet at all especially since I gutted the rear half of my car to reduce weight!

EternalBlue_Vic 12-06-2004 10:03 AM

I have no wind noise in the cabin, very little road noise from my 17's, but the moonroof rattles as well as a loose heat shield from my exhaust that i have to tighten. Other than that, it's all good

_Viper_ 12-06-2004 10:47 AM

Well my 05 is perfect but its new so what do you expect...im sure though down the road minor issues will arise..

My 85 lude was crazy for rattles and shiat

tinman 12-06-2004 10:52 AM

My 02 is very quiet. So quiet, that the tiny squeak in the sunroof gets annoying. That's about it. One day I'll get fed up and pull the headliner and fix that little squeak.
For those with dash noises, try wrapping some electrical tape around the glovebox catch. I did, that's where my dash noise actually came from. So far, those were the only 2 rattles in the car. I only hear the sunroof squeak with the radio off. It's actually one of the clips that holds up the headliner, but it's a pain to get to.

Yup, and the stereo system in my doen't help either. :o

EternalBlue_Vic 12-06-2004 12:02 PM

/\/\/\ That damm squeak is annnnnnnnnoying!!!! That's all i hear, aside from a vibrating heat sheild

nindoo 12-06-2004 12:34 PM

^^^What does the vibrating heat shield sound like? Is it a noise at 3000rpm. Cause I get a whining sound at 3000rpm.

EternalBlue_Vic 12-06-2004 01:05 PM

/\/\it rarely happens, but it'll start real quiet, then i feel it in the shifter, then its like a tin can banging around under the car. It'll do it at idle to til i rev it a lil' then it'll go away. It hasn't done it in a few days and i know exactly where its coming from , just haven't had the time to get under the car and patch it up. Also it rattles a little when you slam the passenger side door.

EternalBlue_Vic 12-06-2004 01:06 PM

you say you hear a winding noise around 3k? I hear it as well, i figure it's normal.

nindoo 12-06-2004 01:40 PM

I notice when my windows are rolled up. I'll be driving then a whinning noise that goes away engage the clutch(whines for a bit and goes away). Is it the syncxros rotating?

do you hear it the entire time you're driving or only as soon as you push the clutch in?

nindoo 12-06-2004 01:50 PM

anytime I rev to 3k, but by the time I'm in forth and fifth you can't notice because of the road noise. Then lets say I engage the clutch at 3k in 1st,2nd or 3rd, the noise whines away quickly. If I shift at a lower rpm I dont hear(who knows it might be very faint) and if I rev high I don't here(who knows the engine is really loud might be masking the sound). Today I heard in the morning at 1.5k rpm I had not fully dissengaed the clutch it went away when I completely dissengagd.

thiscrackerntam 12-06-2004 01:58 PM

I think I know what you're talking about. I think I hear the same noise and I never really noticed before or I never paid any attention. Maybe it has always been there and it just got slightly louder over a long period of time. I usually dont hear any whining though until I actually push the clutch in around 3-4k rpm. It whines down quickly and you only hear it for a second or two. The sound is also very faint and you can only hear it with the windows closed. I was thinking about it this morning which is why your post caught my attention. My tranny feels fine though, all my gears shift fine and shift smoothly in and out of each gear so I'm not sure if its a bad thing or not.

thiscrackerntam 12-06-2004 02:01 PM

Now that I think about it, I think that noise has actually been there for a while. I just never paid much attention to it. I think I remember reading another thread some place on this site where someone was describing the same sound saying it kinda sounded like a BOV...LOL

nindoo 12-06-2004 02:05 PM

Mine shifts well, and its really smooth. Honda told me it was normal, but I don't trust the dealership I brought it to. Everthing would be so perfect if it didn't make that noise.

nindoo 12-06-2004 02:07 PM

There are people that complain about a squeaky clutch but the noise isin't squeaky in my case.

thiscrackerntam 12-06-2004 02:14 PM

Yeah I can usually only hear the squeak when I'm pretty much at a stand still with the windows rolled down. I had that same squeak on my 5th gen civic. It doesnt bother me at all though. That other sound that we hear, I'm not gonna worry too much about it until either the sound gets significantly louder or the tranny starts giving me problems shifting. I havent heard any issues conerning that noise so I dunno....I definitely wouldnt lose any sleep over it at this point unless yours is really loud already. If it turns out that our trannys are goin bad it just means we're gonna end up having to swap the tranny out more than likely. Hopefully not.

deconstructed 12-06-2004 02:20 PM

Yea my vic doesn't have a squeak noise but at about 60 mph the engine has a constant humming noise. It drove me crazy at first but I think I've gotten used to it.

Its loud enough for the passenger to hear. I've always had since I bought my car.

Maybe Its not as a bad as I think.

Hey welcome to the site dude. :) Are you a true civic loyalist or are you gonna be like some of these other switch-outs and give up on the civic when the goin gets tough? heheh Just curious :hgrin:

Did you buy your car brandnew?

nindoo 12-06-2004 02:36 PM

yeah with 0 K

thiscrackerntam 12-06-2004 02:39 PM

I bought mine brandnew also, but I honestly cant remember what kinda noise I heard back then. I have an 01' just like you do. I think a passenger could probably hear mine noise if I told them to listen for it, but I dont think its loud enough for anyone to really notice it on their own, if ya know what I mean.

nindoo 12-06-2004 02:44 PM

I'll try and record some sound files later on and post them up.

_Viper_ 12-06-2004 02:47 PM

My 05 Civic is so quiet that i can hear myself get a Hard On.

thiscrackerntam 12-06-2004 02:53 PM

^^thats too quiet lol

nindoo 12-06-2004 03:07 PM

Give me your 05 i'll show you how its suppose to sound. Get that bad boy to snarl at above 4k. Thats one thing that good about our ecno box engine, it soudns nice in the high revs. It sounds deeper, I like that.

nindoo 12-06-2004 09:34 PM

no noise, well not noticeble enough.

_Viper_ 12-07-2004 12:52 PM

A sweet exhaust would help alot..
Not sure what to get yet

MrDibbs19 12-07-2004 08:54 PM

i would say my 01 civic ex is pretty quiet, i dont have any wind leaks through any part of that car :hgrin: , good thing or i'd be mad
