Location of temperature sender

My temperature gauge is inoperable; I'm sure all I need to do is replace the temp sender unit. I have located the temperature SENSOR and the fan thermoswitch, both near the thermostat housing. I would assume the temp sender unit would be nearby, but can't find it. Anybody know where it is located on a 7th generation Civic engine?

Do a cluster check to see if it moves.

The system is quite complex (no sensors directly drive the temp gauge)

Thanks for the reply Craig.

Is the gauge controlled by the temperature sensor? That part is easy to replace, but a bit expensive. However, replacing the sensor myself would still be much cheaper than taking it to a garage.

If this problem requires professional help, is it something my regular mechanic should be able to handle, or a problem for the Honda dealer?

Is the gauge controlled by the temperature sensor?
No, not directly.
The gauge is operated by the PCM.
Live engine operating data checks will show the coolant temp on the scanner as the PCM sees it.
The PCM then operates the gauge on the dash using that data.

Do the cluster self test as Craig said. See if the temp gauge will move.

Is the check engine light on?
Check for codes?
