2001 EX: How to Measure Cam Shaft End Play??

Are any special tools/procedures needed to check cam shaft end play in 2001 EX? I know anything more than .5 MM will cause the P1361. Can I just pull the valve cover off and pry the cam shaft to one side? Is there an easier way to check?

I had two incidents of car dying without notice, several months apart, mechanic read code P1361. Car ran fine after cooling 15-20 minutes.

A month or two after last time car died with P1361 code, the engine cut out when accelerating, and immediately went into safe mode. From help gleaned here, I determined the PCU failed. When the mechanic towed the car to my driveway (May 2013), I asked him to read the code, but couldn't connect. (Same guy read the P1361 initially)

OK, before I spend any more money on this car, I need to rule out whether or not the cam shaft has too much end play or not.

It now has 114k, I spent 8-900 last year on a new timing belt. I have more tied up in the car than what it's worth.

If it's relatively easy to check, I will check it this weekend, and get it fixed or sell it, based on the outcome.

The ID of my car is listed among those having this potential problem.

EDIT: Crap, no linky. Try this one http://www.justanswer.com/car/0kz3v-...erruption.html

Even if your VIN is in the range, that does not automatically mean it's the problem.
(I've been working at a dealer for 10 years now, I still have not seen one of these failures.)

Book says (basically)
remove timing belt from cam gear
remove rocker arms and shafts, remove rocker arm assembly
reinstall camshaft, reinstall cam holders, and torque to spec
(removing all these parts takes the pressure off of the camshaft so it can move back and forth freely)
use a dial indicator to measure end play

Max Limit 0.020" or 0.5mm

What do you recommend for troubleshooting a P1361 code?

Thanks Ezone! Checking the endplay may be out of my league...Car has sat in my driveway since May, and I'm still paying insurance on it!
