Speedometer differences

I don't know if this has ever been covered, but I didn't find anything. Somebody asked me the other day, what my speedometer went up to. I know that what your speedometer goes up to has no relation to the power or speed of your car, but it got me to thinking. I used to have a 94 Trans Am (LT1 engine), and the speedometer only went up to 110 mph. Our civics speedometers go up to 150 mph (140 mph being the last printed speed). Why is this? You would think that it would be the other way around. Is it just one company does this, and another company does that?

GM puts a 110 MPH limiter on most of their cars, so they see no reason to go higher. Putting the Civic speedo up to 150 is a bit ambitious, but don't forget that the same speedometer control module can be used in another Honda car that can go 150 (the CTR for example). So rather than changing the controls for the speedometer, they just put a face on the speedometer that goes to 150, rather than making separate control systems based on differences in the gauges. Printing lots of 150 MPH gauges is cheaper than making lots of different computer controls.

Man 120 and 130 mph? That is cool

you also have to remember that at +100 MPH on most cars the spedo becomes ever increasingly off. that means the average car (ie civic) says its going 130 when in reality its closer to 120, if that.
