Engine swapping a civic engine to 85’ el camino

Hey I’m pretty new to cars and my grandpa is going to give me his 85’ el camino. The gas mileage on it is pretty bad and only gives about 15/city 20 highway. I live in the city so with the current gas prices it wouldn’t be hard for me to afford gas very often since I’m only working after school.

I really like the body on it and was wondering if I would be able to swap a civic engine into it because I heard that civics have a good gas mileage.

You'd be able to swap it, but it's not worth the effort. The El Camino is a heavy, heavy car. The small engine of a civic would have a hard time propelling it, let alone efficiently. The engine in it would probably be more efficient to be honest.

Not to mention, the thousands of dollars associated with swapping it would be much better invested into several years of gas.

Better swap would be a 4.3L v6 out of an s10/1500.
It would be almost a bolt in swap, would just have to upgrade the fuel system to run the injectors.
