Wheels/tires affecting tachometer?
 

I just got a new set of 17" rims with 205/40/17 tires. According to the tire calc, these are a slight bit smaller than my stock wheels/tires and will cause my speedometer to be about 4% faster (which is ok with me).

My roommate thinks that my tachometer will also be a little bit higher than when the clutch is engaged and the engine is connected to the wheels. According to him, the tach will give a true reading when the clutch is disengaged and the engine is not connected to the wheels. Personally, my theory is that the tach reads directly off of the engine and it doesn't matter what size wheels/tires you have (the tach will always read correctly).

Thoughts, anybody?

The tach is not connected to the vehicle speed sensor (which monitors the wheels)
