Color shifting paint?

I'm saving up for a Z in a few months and was wondering how much a color shifting paint scheme would cost on it? I searched the web but can't find an estimate on one, or any shops here in Texas that would actually do it.

If anyone has any info on color shifting paints and pricing it would be appreciated :-)

WannaBFast 02-28-2004 04:18 PM

you want the chameleon paint.. that shit is expensive!!!! its like $100-200/pint!!! that should be able to cover your bumper...

CelCUs 02-28-2004 04:41 PM

Yeah thats what i'm talking about . . . I was thinking around $3-4,000 for the whole car. Does that sound right? Anybody know any shops in Texas that do this kinda job?

white2K2EX 02-28-2004 05:18 PM

$3,000-4,000 is way low. If you took your car to a good paint shop, a paint job with normal paint would cost you that much. I'd say you're looking at double that much or more.

WannaBFast 02-28-2004 05:22 PM

if you wanna do a righteous job.. you gotta take it to a reputable shop, and its gonna cost at least 6k to get it looking flawless.. plus you are gonna wanna break down the entire car and paint EVERYTHING... like the chasis, parts that wouldnt normally be seen...

blackbullet 02-28-2004 06:11 PM

Hey Celcus, one day we need to meet up. I know a couple of places around Austin that can do it, and a couple of places around Austin that sells that paint. Also, you can see my car when it comes out of the shop. It will have a paint that changes, but is not chameleon resulting in lower pricing.

CelCUs 02-28-2004 07:03 PM

This isn't gonna be for a while . . . I'm paying my insurance via SR22 so thats all I'm waiting on to get the 350z. I'd still like to see your ride, mine is almost back to stock right now just cuz I parted it out to go to cancun. (I wanted to meet up at one of the meets to check out your ride when I actually had stuff in my car)

You got an idea of how much they'd charge blackbullet and what kinda paint are you looking at getting exactly? I was looking into this chromaflair or something similar.

Link to paint . . .

What kinda paint job were you thinking of getting? I saw a purple/green job on a mustang around my house the other day and I fell in love with this paint instantly.

HOUSE OF KOLORS paint

if you know paint you them and if you dont know good paint you dont know them simple as that.

blackbullet 02-28-2004 07:41 PM

Yea, that paint is going to be expensive. My paint cost me $900, and that's with my friends discount. I'm not too sure how much he'd charge, but he does really good work, for a really good price. When my car is done, you can see his work and judge for yourself. The paint I bought is a base coat with a special peart in it that makes it basically shift. My color will flip from red to gold.

CelCUs 02-28-2004 07:53 PM

I'll check out what your car looks like once it's done . . . and if it looks clean I'll kick you a couple hundred for a hook up on a paint job once I get the Z.

I was going to install screens and a system first on the Z but I should have enough for either the paint + ice or the supercharger once I get the car. I'll probably go for paint + ice though, can't wait to see it.

house of kolor, PPG, or even dupont(some of the clearist clear coat made) all have good paint, hok being outragously expensive, nice no less.

RiceBuRNeR 02-29-2004 09:46 AM

HOK rocks I used their paint on my car. You can buy the paints for cheap on www.autobodysupply.net

ragencajun 02-29-2004 10:23 AM

when i worked at a body shop we did a couple of chemelon paint jobs we charged 9500 for the job our normal was 2500 for a good goob door jams engine bay trunk not behind any panels but the paint was any where from 300 to 1000 dollars just for the base coat. Bottom line it is big bucks, but looks great if done well. :hgrin:

CelCUs 02-29-2004 01:56 PM

How much paint would it take to cover the car ?

RiceBuRNeR 02-29-2004 02:19 PM

6-8 quarts

CelCUs 02-29-2004 02:48 PM

And thats just the paint . . . I'd also need to get primer, clear coat, etc. right? I'm guessing it's about 3,000 just for the paint and stuff then.

RiceBuRNeR 02-29-2004 06:04 PM

I got all the sealer, paint, clear, activator and reducer for about $1,500 but my car is pearl not color shifting.

The cheaper alternative is a color shifting pearl that HOK makes you just spray it over a solid colored base. one jar of this stuff will cover your whole car. I think this method looks best when sprayed on a black base coat. I cant find a link to it but any automotive shop that sells HOK will have it.

RiceBuRNeR 02-29-2004 06:13 PM

BTW the color shifting pearls are called Kosmic Pearl

CelCUs 02-29-2004 06:29 PM

Thanks alot, i'll look into that . . . maybe thats what blackbullet is getting or something similar to that. The paint doesn't HAVE to be cameleon . . . I just want something different that looks clean, and I'd prefer some type of color change or visual effects on it to turn heads.

RiceBuRNeR 02-29-2004 07:43 PM

HOK pearl paint shift a little my car chanes from gold to orange

CelCUs 02-29-2004 09:05 PM

I can't find pictures of the Kosmic Pearl anywhere on the net . . . they have like 6 colors but how are you supposed to know what they shift to?

RiceBuRNeR 02-29-2004 09:16 PM

You could always buy the color chart from autobodysupply.net. If you have alocal shop that sells HOK then they will have the chart.

sadboy916 03-02-2004 05:36 PM

spray flake on a blue or something

Blainestang 03-02-2004 06:39 PM

I'm pretty sure that the new "Mystichrome" color-changing paint on the 04 Mustang Cobra is $500-$600 per pint retail from Dupont. Other's are probably cheaper, but I heard recently that thats how much it is retail.

Also, just as some cool info, the original "Mystic" Cobra (1,999 were produced in 1996) paint can only gotten if you have proof of ownership and VIN numbers to prove it was originally that color (made by BASF). Also, for any significant paint work done with that color, a Ford rep and a BASF rep fly in to monitor the job and make sure that no paint falls into the wrong hands. Why??? Because it contains the same pigment that is used in the production of MONEY by the treasury department.

RiceBuRNeR 03-02-2004 06:54 PM

^damn thats pretty cool.

white2K2EX 03-02-2004 07:02 PM

Blackbullet, your car is gonna be red/gold instead of black?

CelCUs 03-02-2004 07:24 PM

I don't think the mustang I saw has mystichrome paint because that one is supposed to go from Green --> Blue or Purple --> Black but this mustang went straight from Green to a Purple/Maroon color. I think it was a V6 mustang as well because it wasn't fast, nonetheless the paint job looked hot.

And thats interesting about the $$$ thing. I never knew that
