I drive a 98 Civic LX. The check engine light came on about a month ago and I finally made it to Advance Auto to have my codes read this morning. I was told the code (P0135) indicated that one of the O2 sensors was bad. Fortunately, it is very easy to reach. Unfortunately, a replacement sensor costs $69. So here are my questions:

What are the risks of not changing the O2 sensor?

Is it possible that the existing sensor just needs to be cleaned?

I notice that my gas mileage has decreased by about 15%. Could this be related to the O2 sensor issue?

That sounds far too cheap. Dealer price looks like $227.

Get the correct DENSO unit for $69 and you have a winner.
Don't whine about the price, that's awful cheap.

From the DENSO site, I cross referenced the Honda part number:
HONDA Oxygen Sensor 36531-P2E-A01
DENSO Part Number 234-4099

That DENSO number is $35 on Amazon (first hit on google).

Kills gas mileage, fouls plugs, kill your catalytic converter ($$$.$$), kills trees, create smog, tear up the engine slowly, fail emissions test.

Depending on how bad it is, can cause strange running problems too.
And keep the check engine light on.

Thank you, ezone. I changed the part out yesterday, so if the Cubs don't win the Series, don't blame me!

By the way, the check engine light remained on after about a half hour of driving, so I disconnected the battery over night to reset the computer. Think that will work?

IDK, did it work? It should. Until it detects another fault.

C&P from the Honda site:

Conditions for clearing the MIL
The MIL will be cleared if the malfunction does not recur during three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs.
The MIL, the DTC, and the freeze frame data can be cleared by using the scan tool Clear command or by disconnecting the
battery.

It did work. I disconnected the battery overnight and the check engine light has been out ever since! Thanks again.
