Intake vs. Exhaust

As a first engine mod which should come first, a CAI or Cat Back exhaust??

ctx66 06-17-2006 12:34 PM

Usually i'd say intake. But, it doesnt really matter, personal preference.

gearbox 06-17-2006 12:58 PM

ya do you want sound only when you step on the gas hard (intake)? or do you want sound all the time (exhaust).

RHCP0801 06-17-2006 02:48 PM

my first one was intake, than i realized i wanted sound all the time so i did an exhaust...its really up to you

bullet02ex 06-17-2006 04:13 PM

its really personal oppinion......... d17 your not gonna make much more power with either...... just sound

BoostedVik 06-17-2006 05:22 PM

turbo!!!!!

Kevbotron 06-17-2006 06:52 PM

CAI or SRI imo, I like having the sound when I want it, rather than all the time would be annoying. Intake's are only heard when accelerating;) also why bug good folks in the neighborhood with an annoying car?

02BLKCIVIC 06-17-2006 07:40 PM

Cai.

se7engen_riDe 06-17-2006 11:38 PM

get a short ram intake. save money. cold air intakes wont do you any better then a short ram would.

2k1_sedan 06-18-2006 12:59 AM

The only performance mod I did (aside from rims/tires) was an CAI. It is cheaper and easy to do by yourself. But as said before don't expect gains, just noise.

MajinB 06-18-2006 01:00 AM

exhaust. then SRI

R3DL1N3 06-18-2006 03:08 AM

buy an exhaust and forget the intake. save your money for a turbo or a swap, intakes are worthless. the most you're going to make off an intake is around 3-4whp.

acidbaby 06-18-2006 03:33 AM

both are pointless>:_please:
exhuast is waaay more money though..
and niether make HP.. dont let the hype fool you.

the only thing that "makes" horse power is real modifications Like F/I, internals, ect..
intake, exhuast, ground wires, misc parts allow the HP already there to be used which in d-series engines aint sh!T!
these and most honda engines are tuned pretty damn good from the factory and dont have much headroom..

if you want more HP get a different car, turbo, or Swap..
ask anyone that bolted All this stuff on and wasted thier money, you should just save all that cash and study on how to build your own ride then do a swap or turbo>

R3DL1N3 06-18-2006 03:55 AM

so you're saying you would buy a turbo and not buy an exhaust? that's retarded.

KlinkM 06-18-2006 11:31 AM

if you aren't planning on doing much with the car buy intake, then headers, then exhaust. If you are planning on building the d17 first buy an exhaust. Then you can still use that exhaust when you turbo it or whatever else you plan to do with it.

well....like the other guy said above, buying an intake, header, exhaust is a waste of money. and if you turbo your car then you would need a 3 inch piping. the regular aftermarket exhaust systems comes with 2.25 inch i think. im pretty sure it is.

people will be better off not doing anything to the motor and just do some exterior work. a little short ram intake would be nice though for a little sound. and IMO, i wouldnt buy a catback exhaust. you can save money by just getting a muffler and doing a custom exhaust piping on it.

i have intake, header, and a full exhaust system. i did notice a sliiiiight pull on top end with all those. but its still not worth the time and money. i know ive wasted too much money on fixing up my engine.

R3DL1N3 06-18-2006 05:49 PM

you don't need 3 inch piping for turbo.

I thought three inch piping aloud the turbo to breatjher better, so therefore wouldn't 3 inch piping be needed... i guess you could do without it but if your going turbo why not get 3inch piping to bring out all the power?

ctx66 06-19-2006 10:07 AM

No, 3" piping is not needed. Back when i was a dsm'er, the basic consensus was 3" piping if you were making over 350hp at the wheels. under 350whp, 2.5" would do just fine. Especially since i'm reading many people use t-25's.. which is one of the smallest turbo's available, its not gonna put out a ton of power.

2k1_sedan 06-20-2006 09:44 AM

Aside from the piping debate, the IHE upgrade gains are minimal and not worth the money if that is all you plan to do performancewise.

naz 06-20-2006 11:38 AM

approximately how much horsepower are we talkign here? like how much gain would you get by adding a V2 intake to your car? or like a full exhaust

02BLKCIVIC 06-20-2006 12:48 PM

Nothing guys.^

It all basically makes sound.

As stated eariler in the thread.

You guys give me a headache.

:_please: that comment is retarded>
of course turbo means new exhuast...
was just saying, that if you are wondering which to mod to get first dont waste your money cuz your still a noob..
you will change all that crap later anyways once you realize that all that money didnt do much:shrug:

i speak from expeirience:tdown:

boricua_civic 06-22-2006 03:57 AM

The Turbonator is what your d17 needs !!

se7engen_riDe 06-22-2006 11:21 AM

^^^ word. turbo or k series engine swap.

acidbaby 06-22-2006 04:11 PM

haha:_doh: no he meant the fake turbo whislte you put into your exhuast:lol:

Kevbotron 06-22-2006 04:21 PM

^^ WHAT! it's fake?! oh man I just wasted fifty bucks, I thought they were all the same

acidbaby 06-22-2006 06:01 PM

lol you had me for a sec there>

stephenb80 06-26-2006 08:16 PM

guys engine mods are worthless. spend your money on something useful like sound system!

D5cIvIc 06-26-2006 08:42 PM

^^ Nooo...SUSPENSION....now thats useful.
