Trailer Hitch Possible On An '02 Civic Ex ?
 

Hello all, I have a quick question for you experienced civic owners. I am going to purchase an 02 civic EX within the next 2 weeks. My question is, can I attach a hitch to it ? I know UHAUL has a class one hitch for the 7th gen civic. I need the connector socket at the rear bumper to plug in the wire for the blinkers and brake lights etc correct? Is this there on the civic? I will be pulling a trailer (200 lbs) and a CBR 600RR (400lbs) so thats a total of 600lbs to tow, the civic should be able to do this at 75 mph on flat roads right? Only a driver in the car. It will also void the warranty if any correct? Thank you all for your help!

why would you want to do that to your poor civic...

i'd rather just ride the bike.

Your putting a huge amount of stress on your engine. Just rent a small uhaul if you need to move stuff.

Well, here in texas, you can be driving for 8-10 hours and still be in the state, trust me, the long, straight highways are not fun on the CBR. Now on the twisties ... :2pimp:

I have purchased the civic for highway driving, its great on gas and a great little Honda. Putting that heavy mileage on my beemer is not wise, so the purpose of the civic is the long trips.

So I have to get a hitch on the car, I have decided on it, and now want to know if it can be done or not. I really dont care how good or bad it looks! I need to haul a little trailer so are there connections for the electrical harness at the back or not? Someone please help ?!?

It that accurate? So if I have three 200 lb passengers in the car with me, I am putting stress on it? It has like 120HP or so right? How can hauling 600 lbs be stressful?

because the weight is not balanced. There are no electrical connectors for trailers prewired on the civic, youd have to run them yourself.

when i went to u-haul to get a car trailer for my civic, there was a 7thgen coupe with a trailer on it on one of their posters.. granted it was prolly photoshopped or something, but it made me go :_doh:

So did you get the hitch installed on your civic from UHAUL? If so, can you tell me more about it? Are you happy with it? What are you towing? How did you do the electrical connections? The person posted before you said you have to run them yourself. Did you?

no.. i just saw it on a poster in the lobby of the u-haul place.. i had to tow my civic to a shop so they could fix the messed up wiring job my friend did..

Ok I see! Can someone tell me if an '03 civic EX sedan has an 'OVERDRIVE OFF' button. Its 5 speed automatic correct? So can overdrive be turned off, which will help towing? How different is it to two with a manual vs automatic?

i think it's a 4 speed auto. you should have D3 and D, which is overdrive.

i would talk to honda about trailers cuz they told my dad when he bought his pilot if he wanted to get a hitch put on to have honda do it cuz they will add more mounts for the engine and transmission and add another bolt to each caliper to handle the added stress.

I will be using it to two 500-600 lbs pretty rarely and for not more than 100 miles total at a time so I dont think I need additional caliper bolts, tranny and engine mounts etc. All I need to know is how to do the wiring for the trailer. Anyone?

let me put it this way, I dont care if there is a little more than usual wear on the car. I have to two my bike and trailer (which is only 500lbs!!!!) and thats the way it is. I dont have a choice! The next option is putting the bike,
gear and luggage on my head and running down the freeway which seems less practical to me than throwing a hitch on there are towing everything!

Besides, keep in mind that 500 lbs on trailer wheels is LESS stressful than 500lbs in the cabin right?

Anyone who has an idea on how I can hook up the electricals for the trailer, please let me know. Thank you kindly!

I have seen it done. I saw an ex towing a small travel trailer. They were able to wire up the the lights on the trailer to work.

I dont know how they did it, but i can tell you that it has been done.

Uhaul installed a hitch with light kit for me and it ran about $120.00. It was not a Civic but a 93 Escort GT 5 speed which are similar in size. The lite kit tapped into the rear tail-lites and signal lights and leave an extra connector to connect to your trailer. They are pretty univarsal and come in 2-way or 3-way trailer connectors. Just make sure the connector matches your trailer.

I noticed in my 2005 Civic owners manual it did say towing would void the warranty. Towing on a automatic is hard on the tranny and Uhaul recommends a transmission cooler.

Also since the weight is now towards the rear when towing be careful when accelerating. Front wheel drive cars usually have less traction depending how much weight your towing.

I use it as my parachute strap attachment point. Still OK even after a 200 MPH chute deployment!
