I've thinking about getting a set of the completely clear headlight, I like the clean look, but I'm worried about quality. I'm doing my retro sometime around Christmas, I'll post pics up then..

i use to have a similar pair....had it for like 6 months, and trashed em to rebuild them into a better retofit.... and i been working on that project for nearly 2 years..... im just getting lazy n have no time, thats all.

i retrofired it with TSX projectors:

I don't understand why guys need such bright lights?? I live in the back woods of northern MA and I've never had a need for anything brighter than stock low/high beams. I hate when I have lights like all of these behind me. Dont you guys feel like asses when your illuminating the entire car in front of you? I'm not trying to be a dick but seriously what's the point?

Re: post your headlights!

^ I agree with you up to a point. Proper retros should be pointed down to an extent ( look at gearbox' pic), and shouldn't illuminate the entire car. Trucks are pretty bad and shouldn't be allowed to have those lights because they hit my rearview mirror perfectly and blind me, but it's not too often I get blinded by a car.

Re: post your headlights!

all these thoughts went thru my mind at some point, being this current retro is prolly number five that ive done. i agree, there is such a thing as too bright for headlight, esp on backroads. which is why i really did planning for this last set. i chose a 10+yr old audi hid projector when they were first coming out, this unit is barely brighter than the oem halogens i had (which i felt were good enough already with philips xp bulbs). on top of that, i downgraded to a dimmer bulb, nearly 1000 lumens less than a factory 4300k bulb. i would say the brightness on the ground is the same as stock. why did i do a retro then? well mostly for bling i hate to say. i just think white headlights look neat. they are aimed properly so they actually look dimmer above the cutoff than the halogens did (zero glare). and the only time when the light is shining at other cars is if i go up a steep hill and the lights are pointing in the air. even then, they are not any brighter than other cars doing the same thing. altho hid bulbs are 3400 lumens normally, much of that light never makes it to the ground. assuming my current bulbs are 2400 lumens, and much less than that makes it out of the projector, i feel i am within or below the 2000 legal lumen limit that does not require me to have auto level adjustment for hids. anyway thats my take on it. ive never had anyone complain the lights are too bright. and on dark roads, i prefer not to have them too bright either because its hard on the eyes. if you think hids are blinding, chaces are they are misaimed from the factory or its a pnp kit in halogen reflectors which i dont condone at all.

and no i dont feel bad lighting up the car in front of me because all the light shines well below the side mirrors. it lights up the rear bumper and downwards. zero light above it.

Mine are aimed properly.. Just saying.. I think you're referring to the douchebags that put in PnP HID kits and don't bother aiming them, or even the douchebags that put them in halogen reflector housing

see how there is a defined "cutoff" line with no light above it? imagine there was a car in front of that beam, there is no way the driver would ever see anything. above that line, they look like parking lights from far away.

Why the hell does every OEM truck with HIDS blind me than? I spend a lot of time on the highway, and when a truck or SUV with HIDs comes up behind me they reflect directly into my eyes... but then again, so do trucks with normal headlights, just they arent as blinding.

mac25 12-02-2010 01:50 PM

Re: post your headlights!

sleepy, that's a badass car dood! haven't seen yours before now.

mine are just normal headlights, with the projector lens. they are no brighter then my stocks were. i agree that those stupid HIDs and zenons (or what ever), especially the blue ones blind people and are not safe for on coming traffic. plus they're supposed to be illegal here but i see minivans and trucks with them all the time.

simple. youre in a car, theyre in a truck. the headlights are just too high even if they are angled down properly. the usa decided that vehicles with hid do not need to have auto leveling systems like EVERY hid equipped car in europe does. so you can blame the dot/nhtsa i guess. even lights that are aimed properly may blind you sometimes if the car points up due to a road bump or hill. in europe, the hids will automatically adjust immediately if your headlight starts to point up.

and riceboy you have the second worst hid projectors for brightness lol. if you guys have ever seen higher end stuff like s2000, sc430, and TL, those are twice as bright as the stuff we're using (with the same factory bulb). they are just much more efficient at putting light on the ground.

I'm fine with it. It illuminates what I need to see perfectly fine, and even seems to put out more light than my lol bro's is250. It puts out SO much more light than when I had the bastardized halogen projector setup. That, and I ot em at a good price and little labor on my part :p

Re: post your headlights!

the illegal hids you guys are talking about are cheap hid kits in halogen housing which is completely terrible. it will throw light everywhere like a hi beam, because the reflector was made for halogens (there are some oem hids with reflectors, but they were specifically designed around hid bulbs only).

this is what happens if youre a ricer who wants hids and buys the cheapest $50 kit on ebay and throws it in a halogen housing.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4...1240422006.jpg

this is what happens when you do it right and spend more money on OEM bulbs and ballasts, and most importantly OEM projectors made for hids.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4...1240421972.jpg

some cars use hid with reflector, which is perfectly fine if they were designed for hid use (lexus, acura, toyota, and this civic type-r for example)

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4...roglu/hid2.jpg

nice crisp beam. the beam pattern is reversed because these are only legal in japan. you would blind everyone on the road using these in the usa. they drive on the opposite side of the road there.

Re: post your headlights!

riceboy haha i forgot about those lexus, some of the IS projectors are really terrible, maybe the worst for output. valeo and tsx is pretty far down the list too. but other lexus like sc430 is one of the brightest. i played with various projectors a while back and one TL would be like having two tsx combined. its interesting how much optics have improved. ive had those bright hids before and cant say i would ever want it again. its just too much light. 35w and basic projector is plenty to see with.

wow. some of those shots u put up there look really nice gearbox. the ones of the lights projections. how hard is it to set up headlights like that? expensive?

MindBomber 12-02-2010 04:28 PM

Re: post your headlights!

It also depends on the weather conditions and areas where you are driving, personally I don't find that even good halogen bulbs are sufficient for my needs. I do a lot of driving on dangerous, curvy mountain roads late at night and early in the morning, so I consider the extra light output almost a safety feature. The weather here is also terrible, very heavy rain and snow so in those types of conditions I also find the brighter lights helpful.

The problem with trucks has less to do with junk HID kits than the drivers lack of abilities, no matter what type of headlight set-up an F350 is using it will blind you if the driver tailgates. The height of the headlights is the issue, although the light output doesn't help, halogens will blind you. I drive commercial trucks and I know that I can blind anyone with my halogen bulb driving to close.

u havnt experienced a real oem hid... thats why u dont understand. for some people stock is not good enough.

its the same reason why do people want cars like a lexus over a yaris.

some HIDs are blinding because people put HID in non HID applications. a stock civic headlight (using a civic as an example) isnt ment for HIDs. and most the time when people DO put HIDs in a stock civic headlights, it creates GLARE...which is blinding to everyone.

with a proper retro, there is a cutoff shield and when its aimed properly, it will not blind anyone.

example of a proper cut off:
http://dziuggy.com/bike%20stuff/cutoff.jpg

example if idiots who put HIDs in headlights that didnt come with it:

it is because of glare that the HID bulbs create. most trucks use a H4 socket, and H4 hid bulbs suck and are off. plus when they install them, they dont reAIM/realign their headlights properly.

PLUS the biggest factor is that truck's headlights are MUCH HIGHER than cars.

i know this thread is for the lamps but i figured id show off my recently blackhouse headlights. It was super cheap, only cost me 25 bucks in supplies and a pizza for my friends who helped out. It adds a totally different look to my car and i also recently wet sanded and and buffed the lenses which came out great.

lemme know what ya think.

thanks, Jay
