My New HID Projector Fogs
 

After researching on HID Planet for awhile, I bought these projector fogs made by Blazer and put a 894 4300K pnp in them. i'm very happy with the results so far.

here's an output pic of the blazers. got the kit for $117 shipped off ebay. pic was taken at about 25 feet away from my garage door. the beam spread for a good 5 feet past each side of the garage. that's a 2 car garage so it's about 22 feet wide. i was holding the projector in one hand and the camera in the other, so things are a little crooked :rolleyes: the projector and shield are unmodified. this was completely plug and play and here's the result.

now for some street shots. output shots are on a lighted street because i tookd these real quick before going to work. i'll try to get some shots against a wall or something. i just aimed the blazers by sight down the street, so they're probably not aimed perfect either. anyways, here you go:

nice, isnt that a halogen projector? did u have to modify it to run hid?

halogen, yes. no modification needed. the stock bulb is an 894 halogen. the 800 series bulbs have a long focal point, so they're perfect for HID kits. i just bought an 894 HID kit and they plugged right in. any of the 800 series bulbs will work as they all have the same base.

here's an ebay auction for the exact projectors i have. be careful of others out there though. not all projector fogs will give good results. some don't have cutoffs or they run H3 bulbs. the results won't be the same.

no tips. buy the fogs. buy the pnp kit. mount them all up and plug them in. completely plug and play. no mods needed. i had to take my bumper off to mount the ballasts close enough for the wires to reach. but that was easy.

Dude, NIICE!! lol. HID isnt the best bet for bag weather (aka fog) from what i've heard. I'll be interested in how the perform in the fog, and rain at night.

well, in the 8 years i've lived in the carolinas, i've driven in fog maybe 10 times. with such low fog occurance, i couldn't justify putting yellow fogs on the car. i'll get much more use out of them as white driving lights than i would as yellow fogs. as far as performance in rain and fog, from what i've read, most of the HID's that perform poorly are the high K kits that kids buy off ebay like 8000k, 10000k, or 12000k. you can't see anything with those when it's clear and dry, so of course you won't be able to see anything in rain or fog. even when i do drive in fog, i still prefer my high beams. yeah, you've got a brighter glare right in your face, but you can still see further down the road with a high beam.

i was hoping these would help hold me over till i got my retro done. now that i've experienced the wonderful goodness of HID's, i'm even more anxious to get the retro done. all i have to do now is put a back on the housing. i've already got the mount plate and everything else mounted and sealed. i was going to use a 4" ABS coupling, but i think that will hit the support ridges that stick out horizontally behind each headlight. i need to figure this out. as soon as that's done, i'll be ready to mount them. the hard part is over (massive cutting and hacking to the housing and designing a new mounting system). i'm in the homestretch now. i'm still considering doing up a set of OEM housings with a bi-xenon too. i'll probably finish the TSX's and then start the bi-xenons. if i do that, i'll prolly sell the TYC/TSX combo.

I have 8000k HIDs in my headlights and nokya yellow bulbs in my fogs and it looks sick. ill post some pics later tonite when it starts getting dark. i personally love the look of nice bright yellow fogs. your setup looks really good.

they are just mounted right to the bumper in the opening for OEM fogs. not sure what other pic you want as the second picture is a daytime pic.

gotcha, so when u say pnp no mods needed, all i have to do is plg the original into the one that goes to the ballast, then plug the ballast with the bulb on it, into the housing thats on ur bumper right?

like i have no exp with pnp kits or anything like that. Like i already have oem fogs, but i was gonna retrofit them with some projector fogs, and then try a hid kit on them like u did.

pretty much. the fog kit will come with some wires and a switch. depending on the wire size in the kit, you may want to upgrade to 16ga wire to power the ballasts. the ballasts can pull close to 10A when starting up! i'd put a 20A fuse on the system. you'll have to run wires and such to power everything just like any other fog system. the only difference is that instead of hooking the power and ground to a regular fog, you'll hook them to the power input of the ballast. the ballast has a connector that plugs into the HID bulb. the bulb just inserts and twists to lock into the fog light. if you don't have any fogs yet and you need to run all the wires, i'd budget about 6 hours to do this, especially if you don't have much experience running all the wires and stuff and removing the bumper. here's some more pics that might help:

that big plastic ring has to be cut off. the small rubber piece is the gasket. don't cut that off.

ok gotcha, so the big clear thiing in the 2rd pic is just a protective case for the HID bulb right?

alrighty, also go figure i took off my fogs today to mess with them and see how i could retrofit them with the dimensions i got hehe. but yeah i already have some fogs, and so u think i would have to updrage my wiring right?

In the 2nd pic, going into the ballast from the top left i would just connect one to my power and the other to my button inside my cabin. alrighty. is there a grounding wire at all tho? seeing as how u said "the only difference is that instead of hooking the power and ground to a regular fog, you'll hook them to the power input of the ballast."

what year do you have? you shouldn't have to retro anything. should just be able to take your OEM fogs off (or whatever you have) and put these in their place. as far as the wire, itdepends on what size it is. mine is currently working with 18ga wire, but when i do my retro and install the harness i made, i'll have 16ga wire for everything. i'm actually a little nervous everytime i fire them up right now on the 18ga since it's right at the limit pulling close to 15-20A. once they're on and stable though, they're only pulling about 6A. i've got a 15A fuse on there and it hasn't blown yet, so theoretically, they haven't pulled more than that. at least not sustained long enough to blow it.


the connector in the top left is the power connector. the ends are the bare metal leads on the bottom right. i cut those off and put some crimp connectors on mine to make connecting and disconnecting easier. the red goes to the power coming off the contacts of the relay (yes, you want to use a relay) and the black goes to the chassis for a ground. the switch inside your cabin connects to the positive coil of the relay and the other side of the coil is grounded. for power into the switch, you can either go to the battery, or a constant hot fuse in the fuse box. or you can tap into the parking lights power. i did the latter so the warning tone would alert me if i'd left the lights on (i killed my battery several times in my old car from leaving my fogs on during the day.) the power going into the contacts of the relay come from the fused power coming right off the battery.


i don't know. you'd have to ask the seller if they have a cutoff shield. i'd play it safe and get the ones i specified if you want the same output. i seriously doubt anything running H3's would give as good of results though due to the big differences in focal points of the HID and stock H3 bulbs. you may get good results with H3C HID bulbs, but why risk it when this setup is proven? that's why i went with it after seeing all the positive results on HID Planet.

oh thats all the questions, but the reason i wanna retrofit them is becuase i love my oem housing, it fits!! i have a 01 civic. But yeah i want that look that gearbox has with his fogs, they look oem but they are projectors :)

HIDs are the best in foggy weather, no doubt. Even my 6k kit in my low beams is better than my fog lamps with nokya yellows... when it is foggy I dont even need to turn on my fog lamps, I just cut right through with my lows!
