What is missing/broken on this strut

1 Attachment(s)
So: I have a '95 that I recently bought. It's got coilovers. I've recently been hearing metallic squeaking/scraping noises, so I pop the hood and find this:
Attachment 86598

Is it possible the guy I bought the car from installed it improperly, or is that rubber torn, or what? Basically, I don't really know how that all goes together, and would like to have a better idea what I need to replace before I go tearing it apart.

you need new top mounts...
wrong section too, yours is not a 7th gen...

moved to 1-5th gen forums

My bad, I thought I put this in the gen 1-5 forum. Must have clicked wrong after I registered.

Are the mounts specific to the coilovers, or is that a generic part store part?

Well, if it was all stock I'd think it blew the rod through the washer that is at the bottom of the #7 rubber (I've never seen that happen though). The washer would be #9 and #14, they are supposed to sit on the step of the shock rod.

If yours isn't stock it's gonna be anyones guess as to what really happened, until you can get it all apart and see. Misassembled, or the original parts aren't compatible with non OE shock?

Re: What is missing/broken on this strut

He says they were generic eBay coilovers with stock struts, I assume that means they'd be a part I could get at an auto part store?

That #7 and #9 combo definitely seem like they'd be the culprit.

In your pic I can see part numbers 16, 6, 7, and 13, and the rod of the shock.

I think the washers were supposed to be sandwiched between the rod and number 13 sleeve.

I can't tell if the bottom rubber #7 is still in place, and I can't tell if the washers are under it. You have to take it all apart to see what's really there or missing.

IDK if an ordinary parts store would have individual pieces of if you can use something else from their hardware selection .

I know you can get them from a dealer, but they may need to be special ordered. I know we wouldn't keep parts like that in stock at my dealer.

Re: What is missing/broken on this strut

I bought some bushings before at a local auto parts store, they came with the washers and sleeve.

I would have been parts #6, 17, 13, 7, 9 and 14.

FYI, this was probably 8-10 years ago, and for an Accord. But it should be relatively the same.

Also, check to see if the bumpstop is still in there, part #12.

Ok, thanks for the help. That diagram helped a lot. I'll take it apart tomorrow and see if I can figure it out.

Re: What is missing/broken on this strut

So it looks like I'm missing the #9 and #14 washers, but to my understanding of the diagram, that would just cause excess wear on the bump stop. Also, should the #13 sleeve thing be loose enough in the #7 rubber bits to slide by hand, or is that the problem?

Re: What is missing/broken on this strut

Figured it out. It was the #14 washer. Hooray for incompetent previous owners!
