speedo problem "not working"

I've my 93 civic dx for about 6 months, and I've always had an issue with the speedo. I have been told its the VSS, so I replaced it, and its still not working. I replaced the cluster, and thats still not working, I was evening going to replace the whole assembly that the VSS is connected to inside the tranny, but it doesn't come out. So, now I'm trying to figure out whats next. Do I need to replace the tranny, or just check the voltage on the back of the cluster?

I NEED HELP!!!!!!

Check your fuses in the underdash fusebox, especially fuse 12 and 24.

Theres nothing in slot 12 besides a black think that looks like a fake fuse, and is fine. My car is a dx so there are not alot of fuses under the dash. Is there suppose to be a fuse in the #12 slot?

Re: speedo problem "not working"

I show fuse #15 in the dash fusebox runs all the gauges. If any of the gauges work, the fuse and ground are good.

A bad VSS (or its wiring) would leave a trouble code in the ECM.

Most common problem is the speedometer itself. Specifically the circuit board inside the speedo, if you are into trying to fix things like that. (Not the circuit board on the back of the gauge cluster).

Very common problem, and quite likely that a junkyard gauge set was bad too.

The speedomoter I got came straight out of a running civic that I seen working,so it's not that. All the fuses are good. What next? This is a pain.

A good visual inspection of what wiring you can see.
A proper wiring diagram, a volt/ohm meter, and proper troubleshooting.

Does the ECM have any codes?

No codes on the ECM. What settings do I use in the volt/ohm meter for testing those wires?

What setting does the ohm meter needs to be on to test the wires

Depends on what you need to test them for.

Voltage, ground, continuity?

The wiring diagram leads my way in the vast majority of electrical related diagnostic work.
Being able to read a diagram can answer most questions. A service manual should answer the rest.

I cannot answer yours as asked.

No help there huh?
