2000 Civic LX cruise control not working

The dash button turns on the light inside it and that's it. Nothing else about the CC works.

How difficult is troubleshooting this myself? I'm not a mechanic but am a former electronics technician and have a meter, for example.

Is there a troubleshooting chart somewhere, and a layout diagram of where everything is?

Can you download the manual? It's easy to find online.
Here's a link to someone's cloud storage that's still valid:
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B_O...c0NTY0MzZmMzMz

Look at p. 23-240 and around there. The CC works off vacuum so if any of the hoses are broken/disconnected etc that could be the problem as well.

Got it, and will take a look. Thanks!

Looks pretty complicated. Should have my mechanic do it.

Does the car have manual transmission or automatic?

If manual, see if the rubber button is missing from the clutch pedal switch contact tab (the lower switch)...If it's missing, the pedal may no longer push the plunger of the switch in.
Same for the brake pedal switch, but most of the time people notice the brake lights stay on and it kills the battery.

Most of the electrical testing can be done from the cruise control unit connector under the dash.

Automatic.

That happened a few weeks ago on our 2002 Civic. First the transmission started slipping a little, when starting out, then the battery was completely dead outside a restaurant. We got a jump start and took it to the mechanic, thinking the battery was bad. But it was a crapped out piece of plastic in the brake pedal and the brake lights were on all the time. He replaced it and it was fine!

Hmm.
