Auto tranny question

I'm wondering if the button on my shifter does anything aside from unlock it. Like, can I mod it so the button is always pushed down, or is that a bad idea?

Your answer was in your question.

You might try adapting an O/D off switch from some other shifter if you wanted something to play with.

No, it wasn't for something to play with, it's because my first gear is shot and I'm having to manually shift to second, then drive every time I stop. So I thought maybe I could do myself a favor with a temporary mod that would make it so I could just push the shifter, without pushing in the button.

The lock does not need to be depressed to change between the lower gears, it's there to prevent shifting from a forward gear directly into reverse.

See, that's what I thought. I didn't used to have to push the button going 2-N, but one day something happened and now I have to push it to get in and out of two. Any clue how to fix that?

Re: Auto tranny question

you should only need to press it going into 2, but not coming out. if it gets locked in 2, you could have a bad shifter assembly. the only part you can really disable is the solenoid that locks you from pushing the shifter from N to R/P. and i wouldnt recommend disabling it.

No, you're right. It doesn't lock in two. I guess it's doing exactly what it's supposed to. I was just wondering if I could make it so it doesn't lock out of two. I can't afford to have my transmission fixed right now and I'm getting pretty sick of pushing that dang button in.
