AMP opinions

I am sorry guys/girls, i though the amp question has been beaten to death but i was hoping for some opinions between some amps.

first what do you think is a better setup

- JL AUDIO- 300/4, 250/1
or
- PPI dcx- 300.4, 500.1

based on sound quality and workmanship which do you think are better.

next question would you recommend anything else (better than the two discussed). keep in mind i am not made of money. i would like to keep it under a grand for the two. I need a amp the power my interiors (mb quarts 6.5, boston acoustic 6x9), and a mono amp either 250/1 or 500/1 not sure yet.

I woud like to keep the amp the same company

thanks guys/girls :help:

I don't know why i wrote "though" i meant to say "know"

I am a big fan of JL audio so I would say, go with them. Boston amps are a little more money and not sure how good they are.PPI has been around a long time but I would pick JL over PPI any day. I know one thing, JL amps put out the same power from 11v-14.5v on the slash series The "E" series puts out the rated power at 12.5v. Thats about all I can think of right now.

PopcornPlaya 08-11-2004 08:59 AM

The JL's put out their rated power, at any voltage, even if you strike them with a bolt of lightening, you're not gonna get any moer than that. They also reproduce a crisp clean sound. The PPI's, too are good amps. Based on the numbers you've provided (assuming you're still talking 250/1 -vs- 500.1) the 500.1 will give you more power. PPI makes a good amp, and so does JL, I don't think you could go bad choosing either. The only thing is, I can't say this for PPI, as I do not know, but with JL if you want a warranty, you have to buy from a retailer, which means retail price. So depends on how much you're wanting to spend I guess.

MegaHurtz 08-11-2004 09:11 AM

I think the JL's are a better choice

shmik1 08-11-2004 09:25 AM

i've always considered JL to be superior..

brash 08-11-2004 10:10 AM

I think you'll be happy with either company's amps. JL has more name recognition, so you'll probably get more recommendations for JL because of that.

meseetree 08-11-2004 11:40 AM

out of the two i would use JL

is there anything you guys don't like about power precision (ppi)

Well when I look for the RMS watts it doesn't say at how many volts, so most likely it's at 14.4v or 13.5v. I think the civics put out about 12.7v so you would lose power from the amp. JL has the same RMS from 11v up to 14.4v. thats why i dislike PPI. Both have been around for a long time, but when it comes down to watts per dollar, i think JL is on top.

I use a PPI PCX4125 biwired for my fronts and it's an excellent amp. I would take PPI over JL for highs, and JL over PPI for monoblocks. However, I havent heard much on their new series of amps, so I dont know anything about them.

KnocturnalEM2 08-12-2004 02:46 AM

If you want to keep it under a grand consider the 5 channel JL 500/5 gives enough power for the highs and 250/1 for your bass...a very nice amp!!! Just an option!!

jmaz 08-12-2004 08:23 AM

i was thinking about the 500/5 but i have no experience with 5 channel amps is there any pro/con about going this route. this might be a good idea! Is the wiring diff with a 500/5. reason i am asking is b/c i have my car wired for a 300/4 and a mono amp now (it was all stolen!!!) i would like to keep th same wiring if poss

jmaz 08-12-2004 08:46 AM

if i was to go with a 500/5 could i run mbquart 6.5, boston 6x9, and a w7 off it. if i can't what would be the best option for a sub. i already have the interior speakers but not a sub. (stolen) so that can change if need be. I am looking for a really good sound quality sub

jmaz 08-12-2004 08:47 AM

thats a 8in w7 i am talking about

doubledeuce2k2 08-12-2004 10:21 AM

that probably wouldn't be a good choice for an 8w7 then.

jmaz 08-12-2004 11:02 AM

well it does say on the jl web site that a 8w7 needs 250 so would it be ok?
