Drilling thru trunk

Can somebody please shed some light on this for me:

I want to drill some holes in my trunk near those black carpet hold down things. What is underneath this? Is is open or sealed? I wonder about this because there are obviously holes drilled for those hold down things, so are they in an area thats sealed from the underbody or can water and other shit still get up there?

Any useful info is appreciated, thanks.

its pretty much empty under there...the gas tank is under the rear seat..just lay down and double check under there.

but is it sealed off or will it be open to the elements? that is my main concern
