6" red neon

i wanna buy a 6" red neon to mount under the HVAC controls.. but the one from autozone doesnt cut it.. you cant cut the cig lighter part or it wont work (so it says on warning label) because of neon transformer inside the adapter or something.. is there another one i could get that i can cut the cig lighter adapter except for low glow? if so, how much, and where can i get my dirty hands on it?

why not just hide the transformer part behind the panel where the cig lighter is located
