IMPORTANT: Koni Shocks
 

New news about the koni shocks. I don't know if anyone knew this or not but the front shocks are a pain in the ass. The front shocks are actually inserts into the factory. You actually have to gut out your factory shocks by drilling a hole in the bottom, draining the fluid, and gutting them out. I guess that because of the way that the strut attaches itself, it would be very costly for a complete system. I hope I am not saying this in ignorance but this is the first I knew of it. Also, the attachment ring for the rear is $11 a piece for those of you with gc coilovers. I also talked to ground control about that recall and they said there was no such thing.

Who else makes performance struts and shocks that might be used on our cars, with or without lowering springs? By that I mean, using the original springs and just trying to make a moderate handling improvement.

Ground Control says that any performance shop with experience installing Koni's shouldn't have a problem installing them on the 2001 Civics. Apparently, gutting out the factory shocks is standard procedure for previous types of Koni's.

exactly, many performance shocks seem to be made this way to keep down cost. there aren't any other performance shock out at the time and probably won't be for anothe year or so. I guess the proccess isn't that complicated but we'll find out in another week or so.

Gutting out the factory struts to install Koni's was necessary for some of the Mitsubishi Eclipses. So with our cars, obviously there will be no way of returning your car back to stock w/o buying some new factory struts. Ground Control said that if your shop has any questions about the procedure, have the shop call Ground Control and they will guide them through the process.

Are the Koni shocks shorter than the stocks? My stock struts bottom out when I hit a bump. If the struts are shorter, then I won't bottom out as much.

??i have no idea, i changed the spring myself, cant i just take out the stock shocks and put the aftermarket shocks back on?

i believe they are shorter, that is one of the reasons for them.

What is this $11 piece and where do you get it?

you get it straight fro gc. it is an attchment clip for the rear. it will be $22 bucks all together. only need it if you get the konis.

Thanks rhyno, that is all the info I needed before ordering my new struts. I had heard earlier that all Koni was doing was making a new insert for the stock front struts. I was hoping they were going to develop an entirely new strut though.

As soon as anyone gets the Koni's in, let us know if you have any issues getting them installed or anything.

Also, was waiting for confirmation from GC about the rear peice to mount the coil overs to the Koni's. 22 bucks is nothing.

Sounds complicated. I rather wait for the KYB or Bilstein. And I wanna save my OE shocks in case if I trade in my car or something.
