gotta disagree with z. I just put the Catz hi/lo Hid on and they are great. I see more, in greater detail, and farther. it doesn't hurt either that they look tight.

though the pricetag is quite painful

runner1738 07-31-2003 03:58 PM

is there any legal issues with putting hids in tyc projectors in Ca?

speedracersong 07-31-2003 04:12 PM

all hid kits are illegal everywhere only used for off road purposes only.
i have xenondepot's high/low 5k system and i love them. id never go back to shitty yellow stock bulbs. one of the better mods for our cars.

JayFReaZy 07-31-2003 07:15 PM

Yea, I was thinkin about getting a HID kit, but its just tooo expensive. It goes around for anywhere to 300-800$. $hit with that money, I could just get a body kit, and it would look way better than HID's at night, lol. Thats just IMO.

TOOLOWCIVIC 07-31-2003 09:41 PM

Im gettin my catz hid hi/lo kit tomorrow. I cant wait. Hey mig what kit did u get like what k and do u have them on ur stock housings??

SlvrLx26 07-31-2003 09:52 PM

If they're illegal then why can the expensive car's have them ?

To clear it up... OEM HID's are NOT illegal... but aftermarket HID's ARE illegal....

runner1738 08-01-2003 02:57 AM

has anyone hear ever gotten a ticket for hids? how often do people give out tickets for hids? would it be just a fix it ticket?

BIG NEWS!
THE GOVERNMENT HAS SENT LETTERS TO ALL HID RETROFIT KIT MANUFACTURERS AND TOLD THEM TO STOP SELLING THEIR PRODUCTS IN THE USA BY AUGUST 15, 2003!

I guess I'll make sure nobody else has a thread going and start one....

I bought the 4500K Catz hi/lo, and they're installed in the factory housings. I'd like to plug Eric at Liteswap.com - great service & price. I got 'em for $500 shipped.

That is one of the reputable vendors that has had to stop selling the kits.

mig 08-01-2003 09:23 AM

if there's people like us who want 'em, the aftermarket will find a way around this. maybe sell the parts seperately, or something. my Teins are for offroad only as well, so i guess the regulators could hammer this area too. i think as long as our HID are aimed correctly, then i'd think law enforcement would leave us alone(at least here in Texas).

When I had a Toyota Solara I took the HIDs from a wrecked ES300 and through them in. Is that illegal? I still have the HIDs the car was totaled though (dumb drunk drivers).

mig 08-01-2003 10:03 AM

you might want to visit your state's website that spells out these kinds of things. there's lot's of informed people here, but this would be the safest way to play it.

BigDaddyHonda 08-01-2003 10:06 AM

You are right about being left alone if your headlights are not too blatant. As I understand it, once they are on your vehicle, enforcement is more of a state issue. It's too much trouble for cops to pull over everybody to try and figure out if they have HID from the factory.

This will just force the importation & sales of HID retrofit kits totally onto the black market. The NHTSA says that importation of warranty replacement bulbs for existing kits would even be illegal. The biggest change will be the disappearance of some the manufacturers that exploited the non-enforcement and brought some quality onto the scene.

Like you said, people will always find a way to get around it -- that's the amurican way.

Somewhere on that HID forum in all those posts, I read where it was the government's opinion that if you modify a DOT-approved housing, then it is no longer DOT approved. But take hope and the 1st paragraph in this post

runner1738 08-01-2003 03:24 PM

i was going to wait to get HIDs but now i dont know if to get them or not

MYK1013 08-02-2003 08:36 AM

$500 for HID are just too damn expensive. I bought european "KOBA" 4800k bulbs from ebay and it hella looks tight. It looks almost the same as my friends' CATZ HID conversion. And most important of all, it only cost me $15 shipped!!
