Civic 2006 timebelt adjuster bolt keeps breaking

Dear all,

I got a used civic 2 years ago and it has been working fine until a month ago when it sudden stopped on the highway after a strange sound from the belt pulley system. I realized that the bolt holding the adjuster to the engine housing had broken and the pulley had eaten into the adjuster itself.

I got a new adjuster and the bolt. But eversince, I have had to change the bolt 3 times; it just keeps breaking. Anyone's got a hint on why?

Serpentine belt adjuster?
Has an Allen headed bolt that keeps breaking?

That bolt is to be torqued to 40 foot pounds.
Too tight will break it, so can too loose.

The belt routing was changed too, and requires a different belt if yours still has the old routing.

This bulletin explains it.

Thanks.

Yes it is the Serpentine Belt Adjuster which has the Allen headed key.

I will share this with my technician and will revert as soon as it is confirmed ok.

Thanks for the info once again.

Re: Civic 2006 timebelt adjuster bolt keeps breaking

Tough for me to say, and I can't evaluate what is going on from where I sit.

All I can do is guess.

If someone attempted to repair the threads in the block and didn't get them perfectly straight, this could happen (We aren't supposed to repair THOSE threads because of this issue, it might need a block replacement if this happens).

If ANY part of the mess isn't perfectly straight and square (hole, bolt, mounting pad, tensioner), this could happen.

If the old belt routing is used, this could happen.
If the belt is the wrong size, this could happen.
If your mechanic isn't properly torquing the bolt, this could happen.

It is only about 3 or 4 simple pieces that must be assembled together properly. If any part isn't perfect.........you get what you got.
Take your pick.
Maybe have a dealer check it out.

Something else is wrong besides the bolt that keeps breaking. Your tech is overlooking the real problem. Unfortunately I cant fix it over the internet, so you have to find someone with some smarts. The problem should have been addressed for good when the second bolt broke.
