Radio Fuse Keeps Blowing
 

Banging my head against the wall again :hithead:

So, I installed a new deck in my car 6 months ago with subs, amp, etc - no issues at all. Just recently the deck didn't start when I started the car. So, naturally I checked all the fuses.

I ended up replacing 3 fuses:
- Small Light (under hood)
- Radio (under dash)
- DRL (under dash)

I replaced them all, turned the key to Accessory and voila! We have radio. I fiddled with it for a bit, checked the subs, tried the radio (which was all static) and all seemed well. Put the cat back together, put the tools away and got in the car to drive home. Started the car and no radio. The Radio fuse has blown again (7.5 amps). I replaced it, tried Accessory with success, started the car and it blew again.

Any ideas? I assume a short would have affected it on Accessory as much as when the car is started, so I'm assuming it has something to do with alternator volts vs battery volts, but I don't know where to start my investigation.

Do you have kids?



Pull the radio out of the dash.
Disconnect the wiring to the radio.

Does it blow fuses now? If no, then the problem is in the radio.

Shake the radio. Does it rattle like the kids put loose change in it?

Do all 3 fuses keep blowing? What all did you install subs, amp, etc? What is included in etc?

Try this:

1. Disconnect the subs & amp *etc leaving only the deck with car speakers connected

2. Replace bad fuses

3. Start car

4. Check / drive car to see if fuse/s blow.
a. If fuse/s blow then problem is pointing towards the deck.

5. Fuse/s good then connect amp and repeat 3-4.
a. Fuse/s bad then your amp could be bad or power to it is shorted to ground.

6. Fuse/s good then connect subs and repeat 3-4.
a. Fuse/s bad then subs could be bad causing some type of short in the amp.
b. Measure ohms between sub terminals

Let me know what you find out.

Alright,

Definitely don't have kids. I will try these things though.
Need to go buy a load of fuses to test this.

Hey guys! I don't how to post a thread so i'll post here:
First and foremost, I do not know much about cars, and my car is a honda civic 2004 sedan. My car broke down during the winter storm last friday and just abruptly shut off in the middle of the street. It was towed to the nearest autoshop, and when inspected a couple days later, several mechanics said it was a timing belt problem. HOWEVER, my father replaced the timing belt via a dealership about 2 years ago and they have records of it on their computer. The dealership stated that although they replaced the belt, they may have not replaced the tensioner of the belt and that we would still need to pay. Additionally, my father is telling me that it is better off getting a new car instead, as the repair and labor is worth more than the car itself. What should i do? A friend from pep boys said that i may want to look into buying a new engine online for cheap, and that pep boys would repair for far less. Please help! I do not know what to do and i greatly miss my car

Soooooo.....that's how you do that, lol

To the OP Just a couple thoughts, Sounds like a short but perhaps in the sense that the vibration of the engine is causing a loose wire to short. I dunno, a guess need more info then what's posted but I'd be inclined to look at things the DRL,radio, light circuit have in common, like a ground ;).

..... and if your any good with a multimeter you can save yourself a lot of fuse money.

It took me a while to figure out how to start a thread too. Out of five thousand something odd posts I have made on here, I only started one thread when I was going to put the Accord wheels on my Civic.

Does it need lowered now?

Honestly, it's probably a ground issue - I think I screwed up on my installation of the Big 3 and didn't ground everything the way it was before - might have a loose negative cable somewhere.

Going to hunt this down either way - have had battery drain issues for a while that are likely related.
