Are Capacitors Outdated?

I keep hearing that people no longer use capacitors to prevent light dimming? Is this true? What are people using instead (Yellowtop Ultima Battery, higher amp alternators)?

Re: Are Capacitors Outdated?

yeah its really a useless fix. if you have dimming, a cap wont solve the problem like an upgraded alternator will. a bigger battery wont fix it either, it will just take longer to drain. optima is crap btw.

Re: Are Capacitors Outdated?

Will a higher amp alternator put more strain on an engine? Would I notice a difference going from a stock 70amp to a 90amp?

I would love your recommendations on both an alternator and a battery for my system.

Re: Are Capacitors Outdated?

a little yeah, but that small of an amp rating increase i doubt you will notice. 70 amp is a baby and 90 amp is normal. for a battery, stick with the proven lead acid battery. try and find the 500cca group51 kinds, or just goto the dealer and get it. stock battery is 420cca i believe. i have an autocraft titanium 500cca battery and love it. just check the electrolyte level every month and add distilled water if the levels are low. it should last you a long time.

Thanks for the battery specs to look for, my alternator is stock at 70amps, how many amps would you guestimate I would need?

Re: Are Capacitors Outdated?

if you're going to spend the money on a HO alt, get a 130A or so. alter start has them for 7th gens. or it might be a 140A.

Re: Are Capacitors Outdated?

anything availible for 7th gens that produce 165-170A? i'd like to deacate the stock 70 to the car and the 100 to the subs.

Re: Are Capacitors Outdated?

That is interesting, I never thought about two alternators. Is that a plausible thing to do?

electric130 04-30-2009 01:56 PM

Re: Are Capacitors Outdated?

i think he meant 1 alternator that put out 170A. that way, 70A avail for stock operations and 100A excess for audio.

Ahh, I wish someone on here was looking to sell a >100amp alt.

Re: Are Capacitors Outdated?

A bit more $ than I can afford, I was looking for around $100-150. That is a cool site though. I think I really only need 135Amps

I have found a rebuilt 120A for $115 shipped on ebay from http://myworld.ebay.com/eagleautoele...:X:RTQ:US:1181

Re: Are Capacitors Outdated?

I am going to buy that 120Amp, going from my stock 70A will I need to change my stock wiring to a thicker guage?

gearbox 04-30-2009 07:46 PM

Re: Are Capacitors Outdated?

most likely yes. the factory wire is only 8-10 gauge i believe which is tiny.

electric130 04-30-2009 08:28 PM

Re: Are Capacitors Outdated?

the alterstart's come with new cable, but yes, you'd want to go with at least a 4ga, if not a 2ga cable from the new HO alt.

and no way i'm buying a rebuilt part from some ebay dude. only way i'd buy something rebuilt was from a local supplier that came with a warranty.

Re: Are Capacitors Outdated?

Hey has a very large amount of sales with near perfect rating. It comes with a 1 year warranty and I can exchange it if it is not the correct model.
