Honda Civic Forum - DIY: Front Door Speakers

I have recently installed a new set of speakers in my '01 civic sedan. At first it looked like a difficult job but in light of saving some cash I figured that I would go ahead and do-it-myself. Heres how it went.

1). The first item that should be removed is the "sail panel" or the interior mirror cover. This has one (1) clip. I found it best to start working it free by wiggling the bottom portion and then prying at the top. It should come out quite easy.

2). There will be a small cover behind the door open pull handle. This is best pryed from the top just left or right of center. This should reveal two (2) phillips head screws.

3). Remove those two (2) screws and the pull handle assembly should easily pull out. Carefull! Note which door that you are modifying: drivers side or passenger side. The drivers side not only has the door release linkage rod but a power lock plug. Remove the plug first, if equiped, then push off the clip on the linkage rod. Carefull not to break it.

4). If you do not have power windows then there will be a "C" clip holding in the roll handle. The best way to remove this is to rock and cloth back a forth under the handle to pop up the clip.

5). This part I found difficult. You have to remove the front cover on the door handle. I found the best way to remove this is to start at the bottom of the handle. Then insert you prying device into a seam behind the power window switch. If you cannot find this location, follow the seam all the way around untill you at the actual door panel behind the power window switch.

6). Once this is off you will be able to easily see two (2) gold phillips head screws. These are flush with the part that you just took off. DO NOT REMOVE THESE (red circles). This will remove the handle from the door, not good. Look for two (2) recessed screws that look the same. They will have there own channels to reach them. Just look along the bare part of the panel that you have just removed.

7). With those screws removed, you now need to release seven (7) clips that hold the entire door panel to the door. I found it very easy to remove if you start at the exposed part where you have removed the "sail panel" or mirror cover. There is now a subtantial gap to get you fingers in there. Gently start poping out the clips, working you way around the edge of the panel.

8). Unfornutaly thats not it. Now depending on your power options there will be a power window switch cable holding your panel on. This is removed by depressing what seeming looks like a solid piece of white plastic. This will then release the plug from the unit and you panel can now come off. (Note: This pic/description is for the pass. side. The drivers side plug is much different but slightly easier to remove.)

9). Now this is a nice little quirk from Honda. With the panel off the speaker can be easily removed...right :rolleyes:. Locate the top of the speaker and insert a flat head screw driver at the top of the speaker. You should feel a metalic clip depresss it and pull the speaker towards you. Easier said than done. Now that you have released this clip DO NOT continue to pull towards you. Push upwards, gently, and the speaker should be free from the panel.

10). Now just remove the harness clip from the speaker and its finally free.

Now I used a speaker adapter plate to install the after market speakers. This will require marking points and drilling them through. Installing your speakers may differ from mine depending on your parts. Also I used speaker "wiring harnesses." These simple plug on your speakers coaxial tabs and then plug into the existing factory harness that you have unpluged from the stock speaker. This makes the install or future removal very easy, because there is no soldering involved.

I had to modify my panels by triming excess plastic around the speaker grill. This is easily done by using a razor blade and following the egde in a circle.

I do not take any responsibility for "broken anything." This is a guide and is not a perfect step-by-step system. Feel free to post questions, comments, and concerns.
