Brakes Squeak
 

I bought my civic used about 4 weeks ago, it's got 100K on it. At that time the brakes had a slight squeak to them. I took the car to Big O Tires and had them to look at the brakes and they told me that I had 60% left on the front pad and 40% left on the rear. They also said that they would just live with the squeak if they were me, so I thought sure. Well now they have started grinding a little. There is a small lip on the rotors which is probably what's causing it. My neighbor said that he would just replace the pads since taking off the rotors would be a lot of work. He said that sometimes the rotors are pressed on. I don't want to spend a lot of money if I can avoid it. Should I replace the rotors? Is that something that I can do myself, or do I need special tools? Would just replacing the pads solve the problem?

I bought some rotors and ceramic pads, an impact screwdriver, brake cleaner, and brake lube. I'm going to attempt to change them myself soon, so we'll see how that goes.

I was able to change them on Friday. It went flawlessly. I sprayed the two phillips head screws with lubricate and then after a little bit I took an impact screwdriver to them and they came right off. I took off the calipers and the rotors slid right out. I put on the new rotor and then after opening the brake reservoir (I put a sock around the top to catch any brake fluid that might be squeezed out which worked perfectly) used the C-clamp with the old pad still on, to compress the cylinder back in. Put on the new pads with the brake lube on the backs to help prevent any squeaking. Works great! I was pressed for time and wasn't able to take any pics.

Congrats:cool:. I don't know if you have a Harbor Freight near you, but if you do, next time you do a brake change, pick up the One Man Brake bleeding kit. It's like 5 bucks and makes bleeding the brake lines realllllly easy.
