Tranny Q

I figure out as of late my tranny fluid is totally lost of color and visosity, edging on water down coffee look when ya check the color. Plus its burning a little at a time when I get done going over 50 and stop at a light. SO. Need to do a fluid change and drop the pan etc.

My understanding is that the fluid in hondas is specific and you cant just dump some standard ATF in there?. Anyone done a fluid change before and have rec. on which to use?. Im not flushing it at 200k, only a change out and pan. Clean.
Thanks for the input in advance

Re: Tranny Q

honda z1 has been replaced with honda dw1 (a full synthetic). i do not recommend using a full synthetic fluid in an older trans. you can also go with valvoline maxlife dex/merc which is rated for honda trans. im using it in my 02 civic with 100k miles. just be sure to get the regular fluid and not the stop leak version. the maxlife lasts longer and shifts smoother than the old honda z1 fluid. and less slip in the cold.

Re: Tranny Q

I ended up doing a synthetic. Or whatever was the top choice at jiffy. I was too pissed to do it myself and paid a lot but the smell was enough to keep me from DIY stuff.

I added lubegard in so the shifting has been fine. Will report back if I have any finnicky issues.

Out of curiousity anybody ever swapped a new or used tranny into one of these on their own?. I know this car is bound to need before it dies on me so am curious for the future.

Thanks in advance all
