How to test a MT that's not hooked up

Hey guys,

I've got a '97 DX Coupe and am running into a few tranny problems. My ISB is starting to go and my second gear is kind of rough. I found a local who's selling a 5-speed tranny from a '96 Civic for just $100(no clutch), and I think I'm gonna go take a look at it sometime soon.
1st question: Will this transmission be compatible in my '97?
2nd question: How could I "test" the transmission manually while it's not in the car, just move the linkage by hand?

Any techniques or help is very much appreciated. Thanks guys!

nothing you can really check other then grabbing the inputting shaft and making sure there is no play other then that its the great unknown. and yes and D series tranny will fit any D series Motor
