Project Car?

Well... the wife is letting me/telling/encouraging me to get a project car. I'm actually looking for a civic that costs around 1000 dollars to rebuild just about and make somewhat fast. I've been looking every day for the last week and have come across only one I like. I basically want a little hobby on the side. Even if I take shit apart and put it back together just to learn on a beater instead of my EM2. Give me some ideas for cars. I've gone back and forth with CRX, 5th gen, 6th gen, 240sx. Not sure which car to go with and I'd like some ideas.

This is the one I might call about, hopefully the person still has it:

Chat it up...

Re: Project Car?

hmm... here in Canada? I need one with a good body. I can do all mechanical work but body work I'm no good at.. so I'll be paying a bit of a premium. I don't even care if it runs lol.

Re: Project Car?

Yup, theyre all over for $500, but as for body condition, it really depends. My ex was able to pick up a clean bubble for cheap, but then again he knows people. But look up on kijiji and jdmrides, lots of people sells their cars there

Re: Project Car?

They're tricky to find, but about once every 6 months I see a 4ws prelude for under $1000.
I have friends literally restoring 4th gen EFs, they're cheap to work on and super light.
CRXs are sick, they're expensive though since everyone wants them.
I like S13s, but it would be tough to find one under $1000, at least on the west coast.
I've been increasingly interested in E30s, I see them super cheap all the time.

E30 are little monsters, like the miatas

Re: Project Car?

I like the accord- even if it's a little old for my tastes.

Let me ask ya, do you have to pay big import taxes? If you don't, then buy one in the states ($500) and have it shipped (another $500)= $1000

Examples from a quick search of local CL: http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/cto/2311873252.html http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/cto/2370907838.html http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/cto/2384303585.html These are only shells but, CL has deals on mechanics specials all the time. Saw an '02 Accord for $1500 the other day because a P0420 code wouldn't let it pass inspection.

Of course, these are in TX and would cost $ to ship but, I'm sure you could find one a lot closer.

If you want an EG hatch shell right this minute it'll cost ya $1500. If you have patience you can eventually find one for about $500.

Re: Project Car?

Nice.. no I never thought of that but yes I do have to pay import taxes... not sure how much though. Everything is so expensive here in Canada.. but whats worse is that they are so damn hard to find.

lazlong 05-18-2011 11:48 PM

Re: Project Car?

You can search CL nationwide at sites like this: http://www.allofcraigs.com/ It even has search by region or state options.

If I was to find a project I'd probably try to find a 5th gen hatch shell and drop a B18 in it. You could probably get away with a super fast $2500 build.

Re: Project Car?

Yea that's kind of what I'm aiming for but of course around here I can't find the shell.. thanks a ton for the infooo

Re: Project Car?

For the first one you couldn't really get a better price on a project, especially if you can get it running for cheap. Seems like it's been beat to shit by the driver.

The second looks good. Well maintained and a good price. Manual tranny, ecu, you're labor and you're in business.

Another manual conversion for an even better price: http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/cto/2388595908.html

Right here! Talk this guy down to $800-900 and drop a B18 in it: http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/cto/2379857519.html

Other good choices:

CIVICS- http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/cto/2372801010.html http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/cto/2370347962.html http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/cto/2363982680.html http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/bra/cto/2349646806.html http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/mss/cto/2331508054.html

Re: Project Car?

There's someone here selling two 89 civics for $400, a 90 CRX shell with a B18 out of the car for$300, an 1993 EG with only 4th gear (lol) for $500. I'd sell you my beat ass B18 for $50 for a swap if you feel like spending a week driving to pick i up ;)

I search for hondas under $1000 everyday on craigslist and see great deals every couple weeks!

lazlong 05-19-2011 01:50 PM

Re: Project Car?

Dude! How about the only RHD CRX you'll see:

http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/cto/2356595894.html

I would figure most LHD parts would fit except for steering, dash, and wiring. Maybe the pedal links won't fit but, the pedals themselves should fit.

Re: Project Car?

I bought an engine block from an old school honda tuner, when he opened his garage door i almost fell over. A mint RHD CRX and an EG with 60k original kilomenters and a b18c swap. I can still barely believe it..

sdaidoji 05-19-2011 04:19 PM

Re: Project Car?

well, import taxes would have been at the least 600 for my car, and there is the need of installing stuff - i had to install DRL in my car when i moved here. I would be careful. At the least, hondas seem to have the least of troubles to import to canada. Dual gauges MPH/KPH, but they keep marking my odometer to km, even in honda...

BlueEM2 05-19-2011 05:09 PM

Re: Project Car?

Well... I think they would be more forgiving on older cars but I'd need to look into it ;)
