Transmission vs RPM
just picked up a 98 civic ex with a AT. the first for me. installed a cold intake and a SLR perfomance chip to the IAT. i did a full tuneup including engine and tranny oil. the tranny was drained twice and will do it a third time soon. it was pretty black when i changed it the first time. my mpg has improved and better with a 89 octane and i do have more hp. my biggest concern here is that i have to drive about 7 miles up a mountain (55mph zone). about 1000 ft above sea level. a pretty steep grade. in normal conditions i'll maintain 60 mph at 3000 rpm. but as the road gets steeper it down shifts and the rpm jumps to almost 4500. is this ok for the engine to run at this rpm for at least 3-4 miles. i try slowing down or speed up for the tranny to up shift but it will not, unless i reach a minimum of 35 mph. i cleaned the lockup solenoid and probably need to check the shift solenoid also. there are no engine lights on. do i have a tranny problem or do i need to drive in the slow granny lane (right lane). |
