Do you live in a very dry hot place? The rubber may have dehydrated.

I would guess cumulative UV damage from sunlight has dry rotted it.

Haha, no ironfist is not joking, mine does the same, just old. Or I sweat a lot on my hands.

Gets particularly worse when humidity is high.

Re: why is my steering wheel flaking?

I see some effed up steering wheels from time to time... I figured different people do different things to wear them out in different ways.

I don't really know why though, I'm just typing guesses here.

Flaking and peeling might have to do with age, sun damage or oils from your skin, or maybe cleaning type products. Or just rubbing with your hand all the time.

Other people (must) death grip the wheel with the same hand all the time and roll it back and forth until the padding comes loose from the metal inside. Usually at the top center of the wheel.

One customer has a bunch of the cover and padding ate away like a dog chewed it or someone keeps digging their fingernails into it.

Re: why is my steering wheel flaking?

mine has been flaking off at the top center for a while. I just equated it to being old and exposed to Vegas heat/lack of humidity

I prefer goldbond ultimate healing with aloe, myself. Brown skin gets ashy easily

Mine is bad when it's humid which is actually when I notice it.

I grabbed one of the slip on leather covers (non lacing) for my 2013 to keep the original wheel in good shape.

You want the wheel to be gripable but not too spongey.

My 2010s was worn in spots but not chunking.

My EM2 did it too, right across the top of the wheel, from about literally 10-2. It's either from sun damage or actually from any other oil/lotions you may have on your hands that's breaking down the rubber in the steering wheel.

^Holy cow, forum elders coming out of the woodwork here!

My guess is that the top of the wheel actually gets less oil from skin into it, and dehydrates faster.

...I know my hands are often greasy from work and I have no cracking.
