Does offset matter much?

I want to get new 17" rims and keep my tires because they still have a good amount of tread.
current rims are 17X7 4X100 +42
new rims are 17X7 4X100 +38
do i need to buy new tires or will the new rims fit?

Thanks in advance!:)

Re: Does offset matter much?

4mm doesn't seem like much difference, unless there isn't any room left to move them in or out.

I'm old.
Old school. You damn punks got it all backwards.

Had to look at a modern offset chart.
http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/wheels/pics/wheeloffset_2.gif
Plugging the numbers in to the pic on the left side, tells me the new wheels would bring the tires outward towards the fenders more. By 4mm.

Did I get that right?

There needs to be about a "fingers width" or more, between the tire/wheel and your strut/spring/control arms/fender liners/whatever/etc., at all suspension heights and turning angles. If you end up with that, you should be good.

HTH?
