Should I Buy It?

Hi everyone,

I am a car newb and I need your help.

I am looking at a civic to buy and I was wondering if I should buy it.

2001 Honda Civic Coupe
Manual Transmission
250000KM
No Rust

The problems:
1. Throw Out Bearing needs to be replaced, the owner said that might as well replace the clutch when I replace this? How much is this going to cost? is this a major concern?

2. It is 250 000KM is there any other sort of maintenance expense I should be looking at?

The owner said $1500 is this a good price?

I really appreciate any help from this community, help me make a decision.

thanks!

Re: Should I Buy It?

250000km is nothing. you will need to replace:

the timing belt and its accessories (if the owner hasnt)

the clutch will last you a lot longer than 250000. i have 251023 on my 01 and its still going strong without slippage.

Yea the parts won't be expensive, just the cost to get them replaced...unless you do it yourself, but its a lot of work...i'd say you're looking at around $1000 - $1200 to get all of that done. But, that being said, provided nothing else is wrong with it, you've spent $2200 on a car that will last you another 200k + KM.

Re: Should I Buy It?

Wow, I did not think I would get any replies thanks!

So basically this is what I am looking at:

1. Throwout Bearing + Clutch = $210 for the part +$90 (Labor) = $300 (The owner said he will do it for $300) <- is that a good price?

2. Waterpump (How much is this?)

3. Timing Belt (How much is this?)

4. Replace Engine Coolant (How much is this?)

anything else I should watch out for? (the brakes were replaced last year)

----------------------------------------------------------

thanks!

Re: Should I Buy It?

the timing belt kit and replacement will be around $500.

the parts can be had for about $200 and labor will be around $2-300.

it includes:
timing belt
power steering belt
AC belt
water pump + waterpump seal
tensioner + tensioner spring

you should also look into doing:
spark plugs
manual transmission fluid change

Re: Should I Buy It?

the coolant flush is cheap.

its $20 a gallon at the honda dealership (and we recommend you ONLY use honda coolant)

you will need about 2 gallons to fully flush ur coolant.

Re: Should I Buy It?

That's getting bit up there considering the number of km on it, but it's still below average overall...provided the body is in good shape...I'd still call it a worthwhile purchase...i'ts not like the car would die any time soon as long as it was maintained.
