2014 CVT questions
 

I've been driving a new 2014 Civic EX with a CVT transmission, and a few questions have popped into my mind :


1- Is the engine linked to the CVT through a torque converter or a through a form of automatic clutches ?

2 - If it is through a torque converter, is it of the locking type, as found on the older type of Honda automatics ?

3- Mechanically speaking, what is the Neutral position in a CVT ? Is it a form of gear or clutch disengagement or is it the "loosening" of the driving belt ?

4- Mechanically speaking again, any problem coasting with the CVT in Neutral for relatively long distances (4-5 miles, twice a day, at a steady 65 mph, in my case), as I have to hop over a mountain ridge to get to work ?

5- How do I check the oil level in the CVT without having to drive monthly to my dealer (as suggested in the owner's manual) ?

1) Conventional fluid torque converter with lockup, plus the variable pitch pulley/belt drive system.

2) yes, see above

4) Coasting in neutral is fine IMO as long as the engine is running so the trans stays lubed.

5) Checking fluid is NOT user friendly, and I don't think it was very well thought out to specify for an owner to check it since there is no dipstick and the owners manual says to have your dealer check it. And it uses a special fluid you can't just purchase at any Walmart (or whatever you have up there LOL).

There's a check plug on the front..... Most people seem to not worry about anything because at this point it's under warranty (or unless the trans leaks).
