Cleaning the Engine..

If I clean the engine with a hose..what preventive maintenance am I actually doing...? Is it a good idea to clean under the hood with a hose in the first place..?

civic01vtec 12-29-2003 03:56 PM

everytime i wash my car i spray it down with degreaser and hand wash everything.

Just don't go driving it after u wash it if u have a air intake

Shambler 12-29-2003 04:04 PM

I usually take off my air filter start the car and shove the hose in my piping, cleans the intake, TB, and manifold really well...

:D

Just wait, I am sure someone will go and do that.

I usually get the dealership to do it, they charge a whopping $0.

Boilermaker1 12-29-2003 04:37 PM

You're really just keeping shit clean. Spraying off the dirt, salt and road junk. When it sits there it causes the same rust and corrosion as the rest of the car... not to mention it looks nasty. Just use a plain hose, don't pressure wash, and make sure if you use soap or degreaser you get it all washed out.

hm.. i never thought of just a hose...do I need to disconnect the battery, since I have a grounding kit and a wire going to my subs?

If you guys wash it every so often you wont have to go hardcore. Just wipe the engine with a damp cloth like I do.

k20a1emcivic 12-29-2003 07:23 PM

its perfectly fine to use a pressure sprayer, it wont ruin your engine bay or damage things just dont have it 2 inches away from stuff in the bay :_doh: I work at a dealership and clean cars all day long and it gets old but we have to clean every cars engine bay before we sell it so there's no worry on using a pressure sprayer, and yes I use it on my bay.

eye_see_you 12-30-2003 06:44 AM

I either take my air filter off or cover it with a walmart bag then get to cleaning it with degreaser and soap then a good rinse .

HomerSimpson 12-30-2003 07:56 AM

I use simple green and spray it all over the engine, let it sit for a while and then hose it off

tfnaaf 12-30-2003 11:26 PM

Spray down everything with simple green then hose it off, does wonders :)

TIDE WITH BEACH>>>>>>>>>NOW THAT CLEANS IT VERY WELL>>>>YOU SHOULD TRY IT

jwalker87 12-31-2003 09:18 AM

i just cleaned my engine yesterday. I stuffed a towel in my intake (i have the ebay cf shroud one, easy to plug), and covered my fuse box with another towel (its being painted right now). I sprayed the whole thing with some 409, because thats about the best stuff I have. Then hosed it all down. Looked pretty good to be, and I tried to stay away from the battery as much I could.
