Oil filter for power steering system that use fluid...Guess they are still making some that way? Saw something new (to me) and no more miles then I drive probably not needed by me since I rarely put much over 100K on a car. I also change out the power steering fluid usually when I do the brake fluid. Old school, I know. Probably only good it does is the warm cuddly feeling I get from it? :giggle: HA!

:_doh: Anyway, to the point. Saw an aftermarket Gates filter for the low pressure side of the return. Probably not a bad idea for you guys who put a lot of miles on your Civic. I would do my home work first and make sure it has a relief valve in it like Honda's automatic transmission cooler line.

Did you know the PS reservoir already has a filter screen built inside it?

Had no idea. Just saw that aftermarket and knew how black the fluid is when I have changed it. (actually from the carbon pump blades which not sure if it causes any problem anyway). Never had a PS problem other than a boot on the 94 Civic Coupe. Must be at the bottom where the return dumps into? Never noticed it like in the master cylinder. So basically, if you were real anal, you could replace the $13.00 tank?

It's molded into the area between the upper and lower nipples.

It's a fine mesh, if you ever look into one it seems to catch some pretty small debris.
Yep, that's pretty cheap IMO.

i just suck the old fluid out with a turkey baster fill it up with new fluid and let it run for 10 minutes then repeat till the fluid is clear.

Just use a telescopic magnetic tool (can combine additional magnets to make it stronger) to fish out clear/clean most of the ferrous debris inside your PS reservoir to save having to buy a new one. Do this before refilling PS fluid back in the reservoir. Also, check out installing a PS in-line filter.

More then likely, if you have ferrous debris in it, it's done. What makes the fluid so dark is the black carbon vane brushes in the pump that fling out and rub the pump body as they push the fluid. Now that I see the screen that Ezone is talking about, that is plenty of protection.
