Change Timing Belt of 04 Civic

Hello all,

Just need some advice and I figured this would be the right place to ask.

Just took my wife's 2004 Honda Civic to the dealer. It has 51,000 miles on it and is 9 years old.

My wife over the years never drove it around enough to put a lot of miles on it.

The mechanic at the dealership I went too (he is a family friend) told me I should consider changing the timing belt on it. The car only has 51,000 miles however, he said that the age of the belt would merit it getting changed.

He didn't mention anything about their being leaks near it that would make it absolutely necessary, but did say that he recommended the change mostly due to the age of the car.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I don't remember the time frame, but I thought it was 80k miles. But you're nowhere near that, so lets concentrate on age.

I'd pop the valve cover and upper timing cover off and do a quick visual inspection of what you can see on the timing belt. When I did a head gasket job at 9 years/127k miles, mine still looked almost brand new. It is only preventive maintenance, but if it does decide to fail on you, it'll most likely result in bent valves.
