13.8 average MPG

So my parents got me a 2012 Honda civic sedan Lx yesterday,
After driving around today in San Francisco, I check on the civics screen what my gas mileage was and it said I was getting an average 13.8 MPG. WHY IS THIS?
It's practically brand new! Only has 392 miles on it.
Could it be because I have a lead foot and drive to fast for short distances since I only drive in the city.
I'm 17 by the way.

^that exactly. Plus those hills and slopes don't help.

Seems like something else is a factor... I drive quickly in short sprints too, but I still get 30+ MPG on every tank.

Do you spend a lot of time at stop lights or in heavy traffic?
Do you drive in a lot of hills? Are the tires in good condition?

Is it... leaking fuel all over the road as you drive along?

Stop and go traffic 2 blocks at a time will kill gas mileage. Stop and go just kills gas mileage, period.
Any time the engine is running and you aren't moving, gas mileage drops like a rock.

Get it to where you can go for several miles at like 45 mph steady and mileage will come up.
One time, I actually saw well over 50 MPG on my 12 using steady 45-55 MPH.

Also, flip through the IMID selection menus with the steering wheel buttons and set a trip meter to reset with each gas fill up. This should reset the average gas mileage per tank back to zero every time you get gas.

It might be because there are not enough miles on it to get an accurate number. The car is getting that number from a total of 392 miles. Calculate by hand and it will probably be more.

Try and drop some weight out of the car and make sure your tires are pumped up well. Maybe do a fuel treatment?

Are you never under 5000 RPM? :)

The easiest way to calculate mileage is to do what GolNat said. Just make a note of how much fuel you put in your car and reset the trip odometer every time you fill up. I've been doing it since 2008 so it's second nature for me. It also helps clue me in to any problems I might be having.
