Engine warning light--troubleshoot?
 

Hello all
I have a 1999 Honda civic 4 door LX with 140,000 miles
Lots of city driving- averages 12,000 miles a year
Oil changed every 3,000 miles

Tonight it was 30 degrees in cleveland and I was out with friends for a few hours and I started the car and warmed it up for a good 5 minutes but as soon as I got on the freeway the engine light came on'

It was a 4 mile drive home and 10 pm so I nursed it home

Its a yellow light on the left- engine graphic with the word CHECK in the middle of it. It came on and stayed on though there was no unusual noises or shaking or flames or anything

Its in the garage at home now and I will be taking it around the corner to the repair shop I frequent

Only thing I can figure is that I was due for the usual oil change at 3,000 miles but if that was the case the oil light would have come on (like if the oil pan nut might have come loose or I have an engine seal leak

Anyone have a wild guess what it might be to ease my mind while I wait til tomorrow afternoon when the mechanic will have finally got around to checking it out...... thanks

Get the code read and see what it means.

Anything else is only guessing.

check engine light can mean virtually anything.. A loose gas cap will cause that light to illuminate.

Like ezone said, get the code read (for free at say.. autozone or similar) and report your findings.

Repair shop called back
parts plus labor is 400
so I toss the credit card on the table and its back in my hands today
Cars, at times, seem to cost more then women.

This price info is irrelevant to us.
What is the cause of the fault?
What repair does it need?

While this is true I do expect full customer service from the people I am trusting with my car
BUT.....

If I do find out they are screwing me or have treated me poorly they then I tend to let others know. If they treat me poorly I cut off my business with them

I'm still curious as to the actual cause.. Just for my own curiosity.

Old age of what part exactly?
