Oil for Trans Fluid?

I have a buddy that works at a shop and he said that he uses 10w-30 motor oil in his manual trans. Has does this sound right. I mean it would be a good lubricant, but it just seems odd to use motor oil in your trans. Thanks for any help.

Yes Dan, sounded goofy to me too but you got it, 10w30 for the tranny, that's right
