Tranny Fluid Change
 

Hey, i saw a post on this in a diff section of the site, but i didnt want to steal the thread to answer my own question. The guy asked if he should change the tranny fluid when it had gone over 200k without it. I have 152k on my tranny, and im not sure it has ever been changed and if it has idk with what fluid.

1. Should i change the fluid? (shifts are getting a little noticable)

2. Should i change 1/3 and leave it, or do a total drain of all the tranny fluid by draining 3 times?

The car is a 98 ex slopomatic with 152k.

1. yes, even if they changed it at 100k, it wont hurt to change it now. (infact, it'll BE GOOD for ur car)

Lol alright, sounds good, i was hoping i would be ok to change it. They kept talking about it hurting some transmissions to change it after so many miles, and it was freaking me out a bit. Thank man, ill be changing it as soon as i can work outside :-)

drain and refill it only once. In time you will do the rest

I am thinking of flushing mine and filling it with trans fluid and that lucaus fluid that stops slipping. Mine slips a little bit when shifting between 3 and 4th gear but when it warms up it is much better. Anyone have any experiance with thsi its an auto trans.

Myne slips a little bit between those gears as well, it did it in my friends accord too. Heard alot of people say that the internal clutch is going to give soon, but im hoping a fluid change will at least help a little with the slippage. People also say using additives is not a good plan but id be interested to here if LUCAS works at all, maybe i will try it as well. I actuallly have oppisite problem tho, myne shifts worse warm than cold.

Anyone know?

mine does the same slip when cold, its just cause the fluid is too thick. if it shifts fine once everything is warm, dont worry about it. a flush will make it worse, a drain/refill will have no effect. additives will not do anything either and usually cause more damage. this is a mechanical problem with the clutches so nothing will help short of rebuilding the trans with new parts.

But myne is the exact opisite of that, when it is cold it may slip a little bit, but it seems like after longer jaunts on the highway, it likes to slip worse between 2nd, and 3rd. I read somewhere else that this can be mad worse by someone putting the wrong fluid in. Is this correct?

it shifts harder with wrong fluid, but if you have slip when warm, the trans is slowly dying. 2-3 slip is the most common defect because of excessive wear on the clutch carriers. and the heat of long highway drives makes everything worse.

Alright, well it is more harsh than anything, just the 2nd to 3rd slips, and sometimes even that doesnt. Ill do what i can with the harsh shifts and then just drive it till it dies. Would i be better off to have it rebuilt or just replace it when it does go? Hard to find civic parts in MN it seems....

if you find a good shop, have it rebuilt. otherwise look for 04-05 auto trans in working condition but they are not easy to find.

04-05 trannys work in a 98ex? Did not know that lol, that would be tits :)

oh sorry lol i thought you had 01-03 civic. nevermind then, but if you rebuild yours, you may want to try and find a TCI master racing rebuild kit that comes with beefier clutches and other parts.

lol i thought that sounded a little to easy, brand new tranny for old car lol. That sounds like good plan, are they like drag racing spec or just better parts all around pretty much?

Any chance you have a number or link for my year? Ive been scouring google and the tci site, and the only honda kit they appear to have is for 01-02 i think????

I found a link to the TCI kit for a 6th gen auto. JEGS has it on their site, they just don't show it when you search honda civic (dumbasses). Google is always a friend.
