guys,

i got an 02 auto trans civic with 75k on it, now i want to be more alert on her needs

1. when should i replace the shocks? how will i know that it needs replacement

2. is it necessary for me to switch to synthetic oil on my next oil change?

3. what other components that i need to be checked?

1. Your shocks are gone already, most OEM shocks are gone by 50k. Do you need to replace them, not really. You can go on the shocks you have, you absolutly need to change them when you start hearing a squeek when you hit bumps or you hit a bump and the steering wheel vibrates a while after you hit the bump. What I mean by your OEM shocks are gone is the internal parts are not up to OEM spec any longer, but they still function for normal use. Until the seals blow they are okay if you don't want to say auto cross.

2. No need for synthetic oil. I would reccomend Valvoline Max Life, it has a high moly count and is 22 wt% synthetic, very good deal for the price. You may also want to consider going to a little heavier oil now that the bearing and seals are worn a little, maybe 5w30.

3. Well, just look at your normal maintance in your owners manual. Maybe have the tranny flushed if it hasn't been done reguarly.

Thanx buddy I appreaciate it, I really need to hear some opinion on these. You are right maybe my shocks are not that good anymore, on bumps it easily bottoms out

Any recommendations on good shocks to replace my old shocks? Im not a racer, Im a dad so Im not looking for a fancy one.

Most will recommend Tokico blue....I have them too with stock spring....it will be worth it

I'm not a real suspension guru, I normally go ask my friend about which are the best and which ones will fit and all that. I do now that with the 7th gen civic's, a shock/strut change was made from one size to a different size (I'm pretty sure the '02's had smaller struts). So you need to be careful about getting the right size. As far as brand, generally if I go through the truble of replacing the struts, I'm track racing the car, so I only high end ones that cost well over $100 each, not really what you ar elooking for. I would search around the suspension forums, it's probably sticked some where.
