oil drain bolt washer ?
 

well i was curious about this cause for the past few months i worked at a shop and everytime anybody changed oil they change the drain bolt washer regardless. and just doing that for months on cars i do that now everytime i change my oil or anybody elses. is anybody else like this or am i just a wierdo for having 12 honda drain bolt washers sitting in my toolbox

I change the washer each time.

I picked up 30 of them a while back (parts counter had them for $.05 each) - 10 for my civic, 10 for my odyssey, and I gave 10 to my neighbor for his accord...

I changed my oil for like 40k with the same washer and not a single problem.

I have 60k on my car with the same washer.

It is recommanded to change washer.

Well, I do it anyways, It's cheap.

I never change them, never even use a torque wrench.
I have also never stripped the threads or cracked a plug.
Never had a leak.
I think it's just them being overcautious.

It's a crush washer, it's suppose to be replaced. But if you are working at a shop and they don't replace it, and the oil starts leaking from there, guess is gets to pay for a new engine. 5000 washers are probably cheaper than 1 engine, so really it's just the shop protecting them selves. Do you have to replace it, I don't know, I do because the dealer gives to me for free when I buy a filter from them, and they have a deal where you buy 2 fHonda filters you get one free, so it's pretty cheap.

I always use a new washer each time. I have a crap load of them in my tool box.

Also at our shop, we have a spare case with drain plugs for each vehicle and several styles of washers. If a car has a washer when it comes in, we reuse it, but if they dont have one, then we put one on there.

Yay for fumoto...no need for washers!

does the fumoto ever realistically pay for itself in terms of 5 cent washers though? ;PPP

oil sump drain washers arent all standard, right?

you can get the washers at the dealership for really cheap. I bought like 10 for a buck.

whenever i pick up parts from honda i usually get a few extra washers as well

No it pays for itself by directly draining into a laundry detergent jug and having little to no mess! That is the true savings my friend...:D

i always replace it. no reason not to.

I do when I live in a townhouse complex and have to clean out my oil pan everytime because I have to store it on my porch. Sucks, but now fumoto is my new best friend. Damn the crush washers! Damn them to heck!

^ use an open end wrench, tap the other end with a hammer. :tup:

it's hard to strip it if you have the correct sized wrench ... unless the person who put it on last put like 300 ft/lbs of pressure on it.

Every time change the washer.
In old times the washers where made from copper. Now is cheap aluminum.
The copper ones can be used again if you heat them up to the point that they geting red. Cool the slowli and the result is a mor softer copper. Better for environment :).
