Front rim's really greasy

I just cleaned them too :hithead:

I was guessing my brake's were getting worn out. Is it a caliper or disk related problem?

eye_see_you 11-17-2005 11:20 AM

greasy .. that sounds more like an axle problem not your brakes.. get in there and check to make sure its not the axle or bearing thats causing all that grease

CraigW 11-17-2005 11:52 AM

For sure make sure you don't have a torn outer boot or other problem. The last tire rotation I did on my 05 I noticed something had flung out onto the wheel but could not see any source for it.

DestnationUnkwn 11-17-2005 11:52 AM

You have a torn CV Boot. Plastic cover that keeps the grease inside the outer cv joint on your axle.

does the grease ring all the way around the inside of the wheel? if it does it's probably a torn CV boot, happened on my friends vic hatch

Grease = Axles / Dust = Brakes

this is what you might find when you get down in there
some places will most likely tell you its easier to replace the whole 1/2 axle..its' up to you...if this problem has been ongoing I'd say do the whole thing but it depends on how bad the inside is...if its just a torn boot then it'll be easy for the shop (or you to replace) but anything else damaged be better to replace the 1/2 axle to save you more cost down the road due to corrosion, dust, dry rot etc....

yeah, once you get dirt and crap in there, the joint is a ticking time bomb, change it while you're in there.

Shifty 11-18-2005 09:12 PM

or your shocks are blown and the oil charge is dripping into your wheel.

igetmadchocha 11-22-2005 10:55 PM

i have a torn boot as well, replacement was estimated at 300 something parts and labor. does that soudn right?

No I had mine done for $175 at a local shop, but the part was only $50.

ticking timb bomb how.....

what are the effects of having a torn boot!?

Jrfish007 11-23-2005 01:49 PM

The CV joints are very tempermental to any dirt. The dirt and crap that gets in there scraths the bearings, which then increase in size and then the bearing either fall apart or stop rotating, hence your front wheel locks up. Bad stuff. But it's just like a bearing in your engine, they need proper lubercation all the time, and when the grease runs out, they don't have the lube they need and they freeze up.
