Automatic Transmission Fluid. What kind?
 

I am going to change my ATF soon, so I am wondering which one is good. right now i am looking at the one from Amsoil ATF . Anyone tried them? Would that work for our auto tranny? it said its for Honda Z-1.

also how much should i get? I don't have the manual with me, so I couldn't look at it up. I think it like around 3 quarts or something. Also I will also be install a B&M tranny cooler, how much extra ATF do i need?

I would not use anything other than OEM Honda fluid. 3-4 quarts for drain and refill.

Put 3 quarts in. Run the engine till the fans come on. Then check the atf dipstick, if its a little low still add more to compensate for the tranny cooler.

oem only, 4 quarts maybe 5 so you have enough. The tranny cooler doesn't take much. After you refill, you warm up the car (either by driving short distance or letting it idle or pressing gas) and check fluid level again.

some said 3~4, 4~5 quarts...which is right? i'm about to get some OEM auto transmission fluid at $3.99 ea. .....so how many AT bottle do i needed to buy? also i'm goin install that B&M cooler at same time..

any DIY out there for change AT fluid.....i dont know wheres the bolt to drain out the fluid....

also whats best way to do AT fluid change, normally i parked my car in a ramp for oil change and rear tire stay in ground, is that help out to drain all out the AT fluid?

get 4 quarts for a regular drain and refill (you won't use all of it). If you have a tranny cooler, get 5 quarts. If the car is stock ride height, you can slide under from the front without jacking up the car. The drain bolt is underneath where the tranny is, kinda in the middle. It's the only one that fits a square socket wrench without attachments. Put a big pan underneath and remove the bolt. Clean metal off the magnet side of the bolt and reinstall. Then pour new fluid from the top. Warm up car, check fluid level again, and add more until it's at or near the full line.

u guys sure about the OEM only for the ATF?
what exactly does the manual say? does it say use Honda ATF, but u can use other ones as "temporary"?

i changed mine a few weeks back @ 26,000 miles. my car took 2.9 quarts.

it's also a good idea to change it every 15k miles.

damn i really need to change my atf i just dont have the time anymore with bad weather and working 6 days a week and i just hit 80k last night i better do this now since i have some time

i use royal purple syncromax ... but mine is manual tranny .... i used 2.7 quarts

What about using an additive when installing the Honda tranny fluid.. Maybe some Lucas additive or Royal purple... ???

I wanna get some of that B&M TrickShift ATF. I can't find anybody that sells it though. :_please:

they say that that b&m trickshift stuff really works good in our engines.... and i think thats crap about honda only lol, they say that about our oil also ;)

Honda atf only, no additives for auto tranny. If you wanna break yours, go right ahead and try it. There's no such thing as honda motor oil however. It's just whatever the bulk oil is from the dealer. My old dealer had castrol.

I know I'm saying it might be the same for the tranny fluid, and btw dezod ran his car wit the b&m and it ran perfectly fine =)

when do you change the Automatic Transmission Fluid??? And what the purpose of changing it???

it collects contaminants that can wear down and damage the transmission. The manual recommends every 30k miles, but I would do it every 15k.

when u change it, is it a flush or just like changing motor oil?

hard procedure or should i have a shop do it? (i know its in the manual, but i lost mine somewhere :o )

very easy, i've done it in a parking lot without jacking up the car. It's just a drain/refill. If you do a complete flush, it will damage the tranny because there's no fluid when you first start it. That's why the drain refill will leave some old fluid in the system but thats ok.

^^^ or you could change it like 3 times in one day. to make sure the majority of the old fluid is completely out.

is there a DIY for this?

ya there's a couple floating around. It's basically just loosening one bolt under the tranny.

yup one bolt its easy like changing your oil, last time ive done it it took about 3 1/2 but after that didnt feel sluggish, when i do the atf i just change the reg. oil too since im chageing fluids and make the car run smoother.

any idea how much honda atf runs for at the dealers? (per quart)

I just changed my tranny fluid last night to Red Line and I have to say its the best thing I ever did.

used a suction pump to start the flow out of the tranny into a oil pan. too a minute or two then I was re filled and out driving in minutes.

after all the posts about what NOT to do...I doubt your tranny will last 40k miles after that. Sorry but you did everything wrong. I would drain that out as much as possible, put honda atf back in, and never use a suction pump again.
